ABSTRACT
A very brief summary of the entire paper, think of how you would sum up each of the sections in a sentence or two.
INTRODUCTION.
This is where most students tend to lose points, so be careful! In the Introduction, you will need to define the concepts you will be dealing with and provide a review/discussion of previous research studies on similar topics. The review of previous research should provide the rationale for the present study and should provide a motivation for your research question (i.e., the effects of short-term exercise on cognitive performance). Note that the rationale for the study needs to be based on previous literature and support your research question and hypotheses. You will need to include one or two specific hypotheses that indicate what you expect the findings to be.
Tips for the Introduction:
You will need a general sentence identifying the topic: the effects of exercise on cognitive performance.
Introduce and define key concepts such as arousal theory (see the Lambourne & Tomporowski, 2010 article).
Explain what the literature suggests about the link between physical exercise and cognitive performance. Review Lambourne and Tomporowski (2010) article. Tip: The effects of exercise facilitating or impairing cognitive performance is dependent on when it is measured, the type of cognitive task, and the type of exercise performed.
What does the literature suggest physical exercise might have on divergent thinking?
Rationale for current study (i.e., what is the purpose of our study?). How is our study similar/different from previous studies? What is the gap in the literature that our study is contributing to overcoming?
Start to focus down to our research question: looking at whether the duration of exercise has an effect on cognitive performance?
Include your hypothesis/hypotheses at the end to explain what you expect (A hypothesis can be stated as an "If..., then..." statement. The 'If' part of the statement is based on related facts that you know to be true. The 'then' part of the statement is an educated guess on the outcome of the experiment. A hypothesis does not have to guess the correct outcome, but the experiment must be set up to test the hypothesis or hypotheses.) Make sure you have a hypothesis statement for each expected relationship.
Here is a sample hypothesis for a pretend study:
It is hypothesised that cognitive performance will be higher in the group that slept for 20 minutes than the group that did not sleep.
You may cite evidence from additional papers in your introduction to support any arguments you make. Although it is a good idea to use online resources to help your understanding, it is best to only cite information from journal articles or if necessary, textbooks.
METHOD
Next is the Method section. Everything in this section should be written in paragraph form, as with the Introduction.
Participants
How many, mean age
Basis for participation (i.e. did they receive course credit or did they participate as part of a tutorial class for an Introductory Psychology Course)
Group numbers, allocation
Materials
What did we use to conduct the experiment (How was the exercise task conducted? How was the alternate uses task completed?)
Procedure
Give a detailed, but brief account of how we conducted the experiment.
What did we do first?
Explain the instructions.
RESULTS.
The t-tests and appropriate figure will be provided in the tutorial slides for week 6. Include these in your results section.
Summarize the data and key findings in words.
Your task is to interpret the t-tests.
DISCUSSION.
Explain what you found.
State whether this supports your hypothesis/hypotheses and explain how.
Do our findings support what we would expect based on arousal theory and the literature?
Indicate where problems or sources of error may have occurred – methodological flaws, extraneous variables we did not control for.
Future research: come up with some new questions or hypotheses that you thought of during or as a result of this experiment.
Although this is not a separate section your last paragraph should attempt to draw some.
