Assignment Task

Task Descrption:

For this assessment item you are required to respond to four criminology and criminal jus!ce problems with short essay answers. Each response will take the provided problem and apply the given theore!cal framework for explaining the occurrence of that problem and recommenda!ons for solu!ons, drawn from the course content and available empirical evidence.

Each ques!on has a limit of between. You may not write less than words, or more than words for each ques!on. The cover page and reference list are not included in the word limits; however, in-text cita!ons do count toward the word limit per ques!on.

Each of the four ques!ons/scenarios will include a crime/jus!ce problem and the theore!cal framework to be used in addressing that problem. Each ques!on will be marked out of 25, totalling.

While tradi!onal essay structures are not expected for each ques!on/response (e.g., an introductory paragraph), you must s!ll use topical, transi!on, and summary statements to orient the reader.

The assessment must be submi"ed as one document; this document will include the cover page, the essay, and a list of cited references.Students must use the template for this assessment (available on the Canvas site). Each response should adhere to APA (American Psychological Associa!on) style, par!cularly in rela!on to the format of your cita!ons and references.

Where appropriate, students must incorporate empirical, peer-reviewed references into their wri!ng. These resources can include readings introduced in the course, although students should also pursue a broader incorpora!on of the literature that is specific to the topic of each ques!on. Research support should be integrated into the essay response (that is, the references must be substan!vely presented within the answer and not simply placed as an appended parenthe!cal cita!on, this is known as a reference tack).

Prior to submission, you should ensure that the final product is free from spelling and gramma!cal errors, enhances readability, is logically defensible, adheres to the assessment instruc!ons, and wholly responds to the questions.

Scenario 1

On July 20, 2012 a movie theatre was filled with viewers anxious to see the midnight screening of the Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises.” The groups of friends and families who a"ended the showing could have never planned for what was to happen next. Homicide suspect James Holmes entered the theatre through the back entrance and killed twelve people in cold blood, wounding seventy more. James Holmes was reportedly obsessed with video games. Among a slew of unse"ling evidence including a collec!on of guns, more than 1,700 rounds of ammuni!on and medica!ons, police took an inventory of numerous video games such as SkyRim, StarCraft and Oblivion – all of which are mul!-player games with role-playing components. During 2020 and 2021 Queensland communi!es were subject to a range of mandatory health direc!ons aimed at limi!ng the spread of COVID-19. This included the closure of schools, work-from-home orders, and at various !mes the closure or imposi!on of opera!ng restric!ons on a range of businesses. Similar restric!ons were imposed in other Australian and interna!onal jurisdic!ons. We are increasingly seeing research on changing crime rates that occurred during that period. How does rou!ne actvity approach vity approach (formerly known as rou!ne ac!vity theory) help us to understand the changing rates of violent crime and property crime that were observed during COVID lockdowns?

Scenario 3

In 2011 a deadly flood hit the Lockyer Valley and South-East Queensland. Millions of dollars of Commonwealth na!onal disaster relief recovery funds were made available to get the vital infrastructure rebuilding work done quickly. The rebuilding effort was in part managed by regional councils. Paul Morrison, an undischarged bankrupt, was engaged by Lockyer Regional Valley Council through his company to oversee and pay subcontractors for the work done. Once he had paid the subcontractors, he was to submit invoices to the Council to be reimbursed. Some years after the flood event Morrison was charged with allegedly providing false invoices totalling $71,448.25 to the council for work done but in fact not paid for. Morrison was subsequently convicted of fraud and sentenced to three years imprisonment. How can Merton’s strain theory Merton’s strain theory help us to understand Morrison’s criminal behaviour?

Scenario 4

During 1994-1995, the NSW government sought to extend the release of violent offender Gregory Wayne Kable under a preventa!ve detention order. On appeal, the Court held that while his re-offending was likely, the legisla!on was invalid. Kable was released from jail. In 2003, the Qld government introduced the Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act 2003 (Qld; DPSOA) in response to sex offender, Robert Fardon, after public concern when Qld prisoner, Dennis Ferguson, had been released.
