Assignment Task: Task 1: Aims/Objectives: The aim of this assessment is for students to provide three short critical and personal commentaries on relevant documentary films and relevant topics in order to connect ideas and themes discussed in class and the readings. Assessment Description Students are to write two formal critical reviews of a short format documentary (under 40 mins) and one formal critical review of a long format documentary (over 50 minutes). Students are encouraged to select the films from the list provided on vUWS. Each review should include: Explanation An introduction to the film including, what subject is covered, a brief summary of the plot, what themes and issues the documentary raises. Analysis and Evaluation A short critical and personal commentary that includes references to class discussions, readings and further research. Conclusion A summary of your overall Task 2: Aims/Objectives The aim of this assessment is for students to demonstrate basic production and planning and creative storytelling skills that clearly builds towards to the production of a short documentary. Assessment Description Working in groups students are to create a documentary project proposal and production plan. This will be a short production (max. 10 minutes duration) produced in crews of 3-5 students. Students can try-out different documentary genres and modes of representation: observational, reflective, political, poetic, participatory, experimental, performative; docudrama, animation. Alternatively, students could choose another format and platform to work on such as animation or an interactive platform. The production plan is a series of tasks to develop an overall plan for preparing and managing the film production. Students may present a draft project proposal & production plan to the Lecturer at anytime for feedback, Timem will be made available in class April 4 and 11. The Lecturer is available for consultation during consultation hours to discuss students’ ideas. The proposal must include a crew description outlining each student’s specific responsibilities. In only exceptional circumstances groups of more than 5 may be accepted. Past experience indicates that less than 3 and more than 5 is not an optimum scenario. Projects must be shot and ready for editing in class in week 10 of semester. Project post-production happens during workshops (weeks 11-14) in the computer labs. Task 3: Aims/Objectives The main aim of creative project is to offer students the opportunity to conceptualise, develop and create a short (under 10 minutes) documentary project. The objective is for students to be able to apply concepts to practices and understand the importance of conceptual work and storytelling in documentary media. The main aim of the individual report is for individual students to reflect upon on lessons learnt during the process of making the short film. Students are to provide an individual report outlining their role within the creative project production process and a critical assessment of the completed work. Assessment Description: Short Documentary (This is a group submission) Student groups are to produce a documentary media project based on the proposal submitted for assessment 2. Individual Crew Report. Students are to reflect on their experience during the semester. The reflection should include A critique of the final film An outline of their role within the creative project production process A critique of their individual contribution Lessons learned from the process.
