Topic 1 – General AR/VR Knowledge. (25 marks)
There are 6 questions in this topic, each with different marks.
1. In no more than 100 words, briefly explain the differences between augmented reality (AR), augmented virtuality (AV), and virtual reality (VR).
2. In no more than 100 words, briefly explain the human-VE (virtual environment) interaction.
3. In no more than 100 words, briefly explain the relationship between immersion and presence.
4. Give one advantage and one disadvantage of video-see through HMDs compared to optical-see through HDMS.
5. In no more than 100 words, outline one scenario for each of the following technologies (you need to provide three scenarios) where one technology would be better than the other two. Technologies: CAVE, tracking-based AR, and HMD VR.
6. Imagine that you work for a software development company, you have given the task to develop a VR or AR solution for a client. In this project you need to propose the use of one (not both) of these technologies (AR or VR) to solve the client’s problem. The client’s problem is the need to improve the learning experience in mathematics (algebra and geometry), so students (year 4) can better understand the concepts by visualising geometry problems in the classroom. Currently, the teacher shows geometry examples in the white board or using images.
After initial meetings with the client you have collected the client’s requirements, that will help you guide the design towards the most appropriate execution. Requirements:
• There are 20 students (in average) per group, there are three groups. The groups can take turns to use the system.
• The school has 20 laptops, 20 ipads, 20 Oculus Rift, and 20 Hololens that can be used for any of these applications.
• Ideally, the students need to concentrate in the content. So, learning experience is a priority. • Interaction with content is needed, so students can change parameters and visualise the content from different angles.
• Students could share same device, but a device per students should be prioritised. • Remember to describe the benefits of your proposed system against traditional teaching methods.
• Feel free to liberally make other assumptions as needed for the purpose of this example. Using the above information, answer the following questions:
a) What is the elevator pitch for your project? (3 marks)
b) What technology would you choose (VR/AR) and why? – (3 marks)
c) What should the end-user experience be?
Topic 2 – Data Analysis and Visualisation. (36 marks)
There are 4 questions in this topic, each with different marks. All code needs to be submitted separately. You are not allowed to use dplyr nor tidyr functions. The use of hard-coded paths is penalised.
7. Modify the for loop you designed in Week 3’s lab to analyse the rainfall dataset. In this case, you need to print the date in which the largest amount of rain was obtained for each month, i.e., 12 dates need to be printed on the console. (6 marks)
8. You work for a pharmaceutical company as a data analyst, you have given the task to identify the top-twenty cities with the largest number of COVID19 cases and create a direct link between Wuhan and the top-twenty cities (avoid entries with no city name). In order to do that, you need to obtain the Johns Hopkins CSSE COVID19 Daily reports dataset. In particular, you need to use Monday’s report (11-08-2020) for the analysis. It is recommended to use a URL variable (link) to access the data instead of storing the data in HD. The reports can be accessed at: https://github.com/CSSEGISandData/COVID
19/tree/master/csse_covid_19_data/csse_covid_19_daily_reports. (8 marks) a) Using the globejs() function, create a 3D model of the earth in which you visualise the connection (using arcs) between Wuhan and the top ten cities.
b) Print in the console *ONLY* the name of the cities/countries (top 20) and their corresponding number of cases. (only for 11524PG).
9. Create an interactive user interface (a ShinyApp) that displays content in a sidebar layout of the Iris dataset, where the sidebar is on the left. The app needs to do display the following (10 marks):
a) It needs to display a histogram (bindwith=1) plot of every non-categorical variable per specie. The resulting outputs need to be presented as subplots (i.e., four different histograms). In total, you need to display four subplots (one for each variable).
b) In the input side, add a slider that controls the data for each histogram and where the user can adjust the maximum value to be plotted for each variable. For instance, the slider for “sepal.width” could be adjusted from 2.2 to 4.4 and if the user changes the slider to 3, then the histogram will only show those data points from 2.2 to 3.
c) Remove the background and gridlines for all the subplots. (only for 11524PG). d) The legend for each category (species) should appear under each subplot. (only for 11524PG).
e) Add the possibility to choose your own tittle (main title, not for each subplot) using a text input. (only for 11524PG).
