The purpose of this task is to help you understand the consequences of the dominance of biomedical explanations for our understanding of health and illness in Australia.  In exploring the consequences of the biomedical model, the importance of understanding the Social Determinants of Health will become clear. Task: Biomedical Explanations Students should write an essay addressing the following topic: Using Functionalism and Social Constructionism discuss the consequences of the biomedical model for understanding health and illness in Australia. Preparation: Students should read widely prior to completing the essay. This includes all required readings but should move beyond these to include other sources. Typically a good strategy is to use the set readings to cover the key sociological concepts and ideas and then if you are using an example issue (e.g. eating disorders or the effects of alcohol) do some further reading so that you have evidence relating to your chosen example.
