Highlights
Students are to work in groups of 5 or less and report on a structure where the dominant structural members and systems are structural steel. The following are a few suggestions:
• A low-rise steel framed industrial/warehouse/light commercial building where the structural system is a steel portal frame (the preferred option in terms of scale and learning outcomes)
• High rise or multi-storey building where a steel frame is used or where there is significant application of structural steel work
• Other building/structural system where there is significant application of structural steelwork (approved by unit coordinator only)
Each group will be required to select a real project in order to study the structural systems and details. Groups will discuss the following aspects of the chosen structure:
• Structural system and typical members
• Loads on the structure and how it resists these loads
• Calculation of the strengths of some common members
• Structural member-to-member connection details
• Constructability aspects
After reporting on the above structural and constructability aspects, groups are required to create a 3D model of the steel skeleton frame using appropriate industrial standard CAD/BIM tools. You are also required to conduct research into common composite steel-concrete constructions in the context of the Australian construction industry.
Final Report and model
The final group report submission should be approximately 5000 words. The document structure in the report template will guide you on how to successfully write the report. A detailed rubric is given in the table below. Your mark for the final report and model will be awarded based on this rubric. The word count and the depth of the discussion required for each section should roughly reflect the mark percentage given in the rubric.
The model is to be completed using any appropriate CAD/BIM tools used in the Australian construction industry at the group’s discretion. Archicad and Revit are just two of the industrial standard applications. The model should include only the main steel skeleton frame, secondary members, bracing members and connection elements. Do not include any cladding, flooring or any elements other than the structural steelwork. Groups should present the model as 2D drawings including but not limited to rendered views of the whole frame and elements, plan view, at least 2 elevations and cross sections. All presented on A3 size sheets with title blocks. Drawings should show as much detail as possible including annotation of members and connections as well as all member/frame dimensions. Snapshots of small sections of the drawings or zoomed in parts of the model should be included as figures/illustrations throughout the report where relevant.
