To conduct a critical evaluation, you will be required to read widely on your chosen topic, and integrate a variety of academic sources (i.e., from peer-reviewed journals and texts) into a comprehensive and up-to-date written evaluation of the research question.
You are expected to demonstrate broad reading and understanding within the scientific literature. This is demonstrated by a detailed coverage of the existing empirical and/or theoretical literature relating to your chosen argument. Controversies, limitations, or conflicting findings in the literature may be highlighted. This evaluation is not a series of descriptive summaries of studies; it requires integration and organisation of material around themes or organizing ideas.
You are expected to demonstrate your skills in critical thinking when undertaking this evaluation. The term “critical” means that you should attempt to make a clear argument, including inadequacies or contradictions in the literature. It also means crafting a well-researched and clearly-articulated point of view in relation to the research question. Please note that “critical” does not just mean finding faults, but also being able to recognize good research and articulate why a study is strong. Additionally, a purely descriptive essay in which you have simply summarized some studies without any opinion will fail to meet the expected standards for a passing grade.
The first two tutorials are designed explicitly to assist in developing your skills in conducting the critical evaluation. You are expected to attend these tutorial classes to best prepare for undertaking this assessment.
