You are required to produce a report. The topic of the report is “Technology Superstar Firms” and is an inquiry into leading technology firms characterised by key market positions, high valuations, many economies (scope/scale), and network effects.

(1) Information (Data) Model of a Superstar Firm. First of all, for five marks, select one superstar firm. List or model information gathered and held by this firm. You can do this by researching the topic through the web or just by using your imagination and thinking it through. For example, Apple will hold profile information about me, identifying information including my fingerprint and voice, plus information about my journeys, physical movement, sleep patterns, favoured locations (e.g. Loughborough University, cafes that I frequent, my home), friends/family/cellphones with whom I frequent, my music selections and when I make those selections, plus categories of data derived from my use of the web and apps.
List or model this information. Research it or use your imagination to think it through. It is worth five marks and will help us in this assignment in that we will all start to think about superstar firms as data-centric.
The list can be organised text or a diagram. If you prefer to present a diagram then note that you do not need to be precise about a modelling formalism. To help you, take a look at the modelling techniques on Learn under “Information Systems Design and Design Techniques” but note again that you can just create your own diagramming convention (include a key).

(2) Next, for another five marks, continue with the same firm at (1) and write about two things.
First, topics and means whereby the firm might yet gain more value from the data it already holds. Secondly, data topics and areas of business to which it might extend its scope in order to generate more value. There are only five marks in this so keep it simple. As guidance it is suggested that you write around about 90-120 words. That’s all. For example, in relation to Apple and the first part of the question, it might be stated that machine learning will help to generate more opportunities for location-based advertising, and that location awareness among family and friends can offer a further development of opportunities, e.g. the machine might interpret when there is a family-gathering, or when one member of the family is away on business. Then, in relation to the second part of the question, it might be stated that a lot of information is useful to healthcare (e.g. physical movement, location, web-searches, use of apps).and this is potentially an area of further acquisition and development to build more data for more services of value.

(3) For the main part of the report, you are required to select one firm and write a case study about it. It does not have to be the same firm as you selected at (1) and (2). At the top of the first page of your report give the title, ‘Technology Superstar Firms,’ then give the name of the firm that you have selected (e.g. AliBaba, Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Samsung, TenCent, WalMart). The report itself should be (a) a broad description of the firm, (b) its history (c) a commentary and critique of its future challenges,
