Task:
ABSTRACT
This HND Project is a game creation based off (well you might as well call it a clone of) the famous mobile device game, Pokemon Go. It’s called Petmon Go, the Petmon stands for Pet Monsters and the Go just means go catch them. The reason for giving that name is because it will contain pet animals, creatures, bugs, mammals ECT. Petmon Go is a location-based AR (Augmented Reality) mobile application/game where you’ll have a customizable 3D model character that will be positioned on the ground at your location, which follows your movements in the real world (using the Go Map Package) as you walk or drive around your location. Go Map is the kind of map that is used for satnavs, and you can customize every aspect of the map. The color and size of the roads, grass, water and the map itself, even high map to illustrate the real world with buildings, hills ect (the high map will not be used in the game because of the Polly count will be too high and cause the game to jitter and may even crash on low end devices) and a lot more.
Background/Motivation
The first main factor of my motivation for this project is I love a new task in creating something new, by the means of graphic design, 3D modeling, game creation, it’s fun playing games but for me it’s more fun creating them because you look at some of these games and you think how the hell did they create that, it’s amazing. And then once you start game development you then realize how they do the animations of the character and how they do the cut scenes, the modeling and creating the game. It’s all done by an imagination, tools, coding and skills that’s it.
The second factor is when I, my fiancée and my two children started playing Pokemon Go we all got addicted straight away, because it was fun and a new game design that no one has ever seen. But then we collected nearly all the Pokemon, so it’s started getting a bit boring, plus there where loads of bugs in the app that made the app keep freezing and crashing ECT, even after a year of release there was still bugs.
Problem Description & Possible Solution
Problem 1:
The First main problem is Pokemon Go have their own server to run their app and database from. Whereas I don’t have my own server at present. I currently only have a shared hosting account with ecowebhosting.co.uk.
Solution to Problem 1:
The solution to the problem is release the app to the android and iOS stores only in the United Kingdom, and hopefully start earning money after a month or so or might even be before that, when my customers start buying In App Purchases. Then pay for an advanced private server on my advanced hosting package for £54 a month, and then release the app to more locations. Once im earning more money and need my own server, I will build it myself (as I’ve been building computer since I was 16 so for the past 17 years), if needed or just carry on using the private server.
Problem 2:
The second problem is I’ve brought a Notification System that sends local and push notifications to the user’s device for my app, but I won’t be able to implement it until I’ve have a private server or my own server as a server is needed to send the notifications.
Aim
The aim is to research and investigate what is need for such application. To also design and develop a mobile application called Petmon Go, to produce a better and less bugger and more attractive version of the well-known mobile device game, Pokemon GO. By using unit testing, integration testing, system testing and acceptance testing techniques. With many more features and activities so my users won’t get bored and on completion to deploy to as many different platforms.
1.4: Objectives
My Objectives are to make a better and more fun user experience, version of Pokemon go, by the means of:
• Good hard Research to what functionality and tools are needed
• Analyse, design, implement and test the system.
• Design a Better GUI – more colourful and less plain.
• Adding - Trading with Friend’s or anyone within a radius of your character.
• Battling in a proper battle field where you can move, jump, fly ECT, instead of just tapping the screen. Unity3d Networking API framework will be used to accomplish this.
• Adding - Breading of the pet monsters, to make a rare kind of Petmon.
• Adding leader board for how many battles won, the highest collection of Petmon, items, eggs ECT. And much more in the future.
• Evaluate and produce a report.
1.5: Risks & Assumptions
First off I didn’t realise how much there was to developing a Pokemon Go game, just looking at the game and playing it didn’t look like there was a lot to it, but now that im actually developing a game like it. There’s even much more to it than I thought, the Pokemon Go game is huge. The game will be ready for release once all the main functionality is implemented, but there’s a risk that all of the extra bits I want to put into the game like breeding, trading and loads of items etc. won’t be in this document.
