This assignment is formulated to test knowledge of advanced materials and processing technologies, specifically to demonstrate an understanding of the interactions between design requirements for a component and the materials and manufacturing route selection. 

Choose one engineering component from the following list to answer assessment questions: 

• Brake disc (automotive or aerospace) 

• High pressure compressor blade (turbofan gas turbine engine)  

• Piston from an internal combustion engine
 

Assessment: Written Report Brief  

Section 1 

a) Provide a review of how your component functions as part of a system (

b) Describe the in-service conditions and loading modes that your component operates under and therefore justify the material properties & characteristics needed for your selected  component. 

c) Examine the selected engineering component considering the common failure modes (e.g.  fatigue, brittle fracture, creep etc) 

Section 2 

a) Perform a material selection for your component using GRANTA EDUPACK software, so  justifying the conventional material used for your selected component. Use relevant  material performance indices and GRANTA EDUPACK selection charts to justify you selection. 

b) Discuss any alternate high performance material(s) that could be used for your chosen  component. Select such a material based on a combination of GRANTA EDUPACK software  justification and reasoned discussion/argument based on published literature. Focus on advanced materials such as composites (polymer, metal or ceramic matrix), ceramics and  high performance alloys as is relevant to the component in question.

c) Discuss the manufacturing process for the proposed material and correlate how your  selected manufacturing route imparts microstructural changes to the material (15 marks) 

d) Discuss the environmental, end costs and remanufacture of products taking into account  legislative requirements
