Overview
Identify and review recent peer-reviewed journal articles regarding the use of agile. Review the research and complete an annotated bibliography using the template provided. This AB is then used as a basis for a critical analysis of the current rese being undertaken in the field. This assignment is designed to be undertaken in a group to generate discussion on current applicability of the research selected.
- Identify 8 peer reviewed journal articles published (or pre-published) within the last 12 months (March 2024).
- Create a single Annotated Bibliography (AB) for the group. (See required template provided)
- Treat the AB table as a note-taking exercise e.g. brief and useful, not copious. These can be dot points.
- B.Following the AB, conclude with a 1 page max Critical Analysis (CA) summation of the articles in the AB.
- To do this well, you will need to review the articles in the AB, not talk about the topic of agile.
- Hint: This is not an essay! Consider the trends in research or compare and synthesise the information.
- All articles from the AB must be incorporated (and cited). No other external sources should be used.
- A full Reference List on a new page should be included after the CA.
- Citations and References must be in SCU Harvard only.
Assessment Requirements Brief Summary
This assessment requires students to critically engage with recent peer-reviewed research on Agile methodologies and evaluate current research trends in the field. The task is designed as a group-based activity to encourage collaborative discussion and shared academic insight.
The assessment is divided into two core components:
-
Annotated Bibliography (AB)
- Identify eight (8) peer-reviewed journal articles related to Agile practices.
- All articles must be published or pre-published within the last 12 months (as of March 2024).
- A single group Annotated Bibliography must be created using the provided template.
- Entries should be brief, clear, and analytical, serving as structured notes rather than detailed summaries.
- Dot points are acceptable, provided they are meaningful and relevant.
-
Critical Analysis (CA)
- A maximum one-page critical analysis must follow the annotated bibliography.
- The analysis should synthesise and compare the selected research, identifying trends, patterns, and gaps.
- This is not an essay and should focus on reviewing the research itself, not explaining Agile concepts.
- All eight articles from the AB must be incorporated and cited.
- No additional external sources are permitted.
- A complete reference list must be included on a new page.
- SCU Harvard referencing style must be used consistently for both citations and references.
Key Pointers to Be Covered:
- Recent and relevant peer-reviewed research
- Accurate use of the AB template
- Concise and analytical annotations
- Research-focused synthesis in the critical analysis
- Correct SCU Harvard referencing
- Integration of all selected sources
Academic Mentor’s Step-by-Step Guidance Approach
The academic mentor guided the student through a structured, step-by-step process to ensure clarity, accuracy, and alignment with assessment expectations.
Step 1: Understanding the Assessment Scope
The mentor first clarified the purpose of the assignment evaluating current Agile research trends, not explaining Agile theory. Emphasis was placed on research evaluation and synthesis.
Step 2: Identifying Appropriate Journal Articles
Guidance was provided on locating peer-reviewed journals published within the specified timeframe. The mentor ensured the student selected articles that collectively reflected diverse perspectives and current research directions.
Step 3: Developing the Annotated Bibliography
The mentor explained how to complete each section of the AB template effectively:
- Summarising key research objectives
- Noting methodologies and findings
- Identifying relevance to Agile research trends
The student was advised to keep entries brief, structured, and analytical, using dot points where appropriate.
Step 4: Planning the Critical Analysis
The mentor guided the student to:
- Compare findings across articles
- Identify common themes, emerging trends, and contradictions
- Synthesize insights rather than summarising individual studies
Clear instruction was given to avoid essay-style writing and focus on research synthesis.
Step 5: Referencing and Academic Integrity
The mentor ensured all citations and references followed SCU Harvard style and confirmed that only the eight selected articles were cited, maintaining compliance with assessment rules.
Step 6: Review and Refinement
The completed AB and CA were reviewed for clarity, cohesion, and academic tone. Feedback was provided to strengthen analytical depth and ensure all assessment criteria were fully met.
Outcome Achieved and Learning Objectives Covered
Final Outcome:
- A concise, well-structured group Annotated Bibliography using recent peer-reviewed sources
