Assignment Task:

The purpose of this assignment is to improve your understanding in choosing between and using methods to assess the relationship between variables and make comparisons across different segments. It will develop your skills in being able to critically think and enhance your analytical skills. Specifically, we want you to access the Excel database provided on UTSOnline that consists of five datasets, each going to be used for answering one question.

We want you to investigate a series of questions using this database using the various statistical techniques you have been exposed to in Business Statistics and answer several managerial questions.

Each group must complete all questions. We strongly recommend you do not assign a question to each group member to complete, but instead consider having an initial discussion, then each member completing all five questions on their own, and then come together as a group to find a common (superior) solution.

You can think about structuring you answer consisting of various parts to address your explanation: introduction and approach/assumptions; inputs; results; interpretation and conclusions. Of course, sometimes things can be done all at once (e.g., a table listing inputs and results). In turn, a better answer goes beyond answers of the type: “here is the output, figure out what we did and interpret it yourself”. In turn, better answers will show that students:

• explain their interpretation of the statement and which variables they have used;

• reveal some insight into the type of variable (quantitative, qualitative) and therefore what techniques are appropriate;

• clearly show various inputs to the calculations used to construct their answers and justification or assumptions made in some cases for why they chose these as inputs (e.g., degrees of freedom; assumption).

• will consider they have access to a computer to complete the assignment. As such, you will be expected to use critical table values that are accurate (i.e., not rounded or obtained from an offline source such as a table listed in a textbook or table you may use in exams). This selection of table should be based on your knowledge about the population parameters, level of significance and degrees of freedom inputs, which you should also state to justify your selection of table.

• present any inputs and answers to two decimal places (unless otherwise instructed), but round calculations only at the end to avoid rounding error. Probabilities should be presented as percentages.

• present results in an easy to follow manner, and not produce superfluous information (e.g., tell us the median, when an average is all that is required);

• use clear labelling of results, rather than using labelling from the original question such as not explaining that “2” represents a particular group, segment or process;

• make a clear conclusion about whether the statement is supported or not and make assertions about how the statistical information is relevant to the managerial context.

Question1: Information from a carefully selected sample of Australian adults are collected and summarised in the dataset named Ausdemo. Prepare appropriate tables/graphs to summarise the following information:

(a) Occupation

(b) Work situation

(c) Travel time to work

(d) Total income and gender

Question 2: Using the information from Question 1, answer the following:

(a) What is the most ‘typical’ occupation in this sample? Of the people in this sample who gave their occupation, what percentage were semi-professional/managerial?

(b) What is the most ‘typical’ work situation in this sample? Of the people who responded to this question, what percentage were working full time?

(c) Is the variable ‘travel’ normally distributed? Construct a boxplot and provide a ‘5 number summary’ of the distribution.

(d) Test if differences in total income can be attributed to gender. State the null and alternative hypotheses. Choose the appropriate statistical test.

Question 3: Using the information from Question 1, answer the following:

(a) Produce and interpret the 95% confidence interval for the proportion of adult Australians who are women.

(b) From census data 20 years ago the proportion of Australians who were married was 0.71. Has the proportion of Australians who are married decreased? Choose the appropriate statistical test.

(c) Is the result significant?

(d) State your conclusion.

Question 4: A government official believed that a promotional video that outlined the benefits of a new proposed health scheme would convince people to adopt the scheme. A sample of 37 Australian adults indicated their attitudes towards the scheme before and after viewing the video. Attitude was measured using a standardized attitude test on which higher scores indicated a more positive attitude. The scores obtained by the participants before and after viewing the video can be found in the dataset named Video_2. Assume that the differences are normally distributed. Does the data support the video marker’s prediction that viewing the video will improve people’s attitude towards the proposed new national health scheme?

(a) What is the variable we are most interested in and how is it measured?

(b) State the population(s) for this study. What is the research hypothesis for this study?

(c) Choose the appropriate statistical test.

(d) Interpret the 95% confidence interval for the mean difference and state your conclusion.
