Case Study - Zhang Family
Daiyu Zhang is a 31-year-old female who, in 2009, married her 37-year-old husband, Jin Zhang. After trying to conceive for 2 years, Daiyu fell pregnant in 2011 but unfortunately miscarried at 8 weeks gestation. The following year Daiyu fell pregnant again which appeared to be going well until 17 weeks gestation when she again suffered a miscarriage. Following this, the couple decided to have a break from trying to conceive. In 2014 Daiyu had her third miscarriage at 14 weeks gestation. In 2016 Daiyu and Jin emigrated from China to Australia, which was also the year that they greeted their first-born daughter Lucy. Jin’s parents, who have been married since 1977, also immigrated to Australia at the same time, because Jin, as the only son, wanted to continue to provide financial support for his father Wei Zhang (74) and mother Ling Zhang (67). Although Daiyu is happy to have moved with her husband and to provide support for her parents in law, she misses her family that she left back in China, especially since the birth of her second daughter Olivia 6 months ago. Her parents have been married since 1985, and she has always been very close to her father, Meng Fei (61). Although Daiyu is close to her mother, An Fei (56), An has been closer to Daiyu’s younger brothers, Ru Fei (29) and Tao Fei (27). Daiyu also feels sad that her brother Tao has recently separated from his wife, Huang Fei (24), and wishes that she was back in China to provide emotional support for Tao and his 2 year old son Johnny
