Highlights
Definition:
According to the World Health Organization and the International Committee for Monitoring Assisted Reproductive Technology, “infertility is a disorder of the reproductive system which is defined by the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after one year or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse”.
Scenario:
You are part of a reputed research team comprised of pharmacologists, pharmaceutical chemists, and medical scientists at a Multinational Pharmaceutical Company. Your group is interested in drug discovery and development with a focus on male and female infertility. Recent discussions within your group have strongly supported your interest in the discovery of potential anti-infertility drugs from medicinal plants, and one of the pharmacologists in the group highlighted that several modern pharmaceutical drugs currently in use have roots connected to traditional medicinal plants. These discussions motivated you to write a research proposal to be submitted to the internal research committee for approval. You have then started to write a research proposal on pre-clinical pharmacological evaluation of a raw extract of potential medicinal plant of your choice. It is very important to appreciate that a raw extract could contain multiple individual compounds. However, it is imperative that you recognise that you are selecting the material that represents the initial raw extract for this project. Later, you discussed with your group member on the design and approach of the proposed project. Your group member suggested to study the raw extract at least at 3 dose levels in your planned experiments (at least 2 different experiments to draw meaningful conclusions) for which you agreed and appreciated their suggestion. When you asked your group member on whether to choose male or female infertility problem for this proposal, it was left to your interest.
Assignment Task and Structure:
The purpose of this assignment is to provide you experience with designing a research study, and writing a research proposal to understand the scope, originality and quality of intended research. The research proposal addresses your knowledge of existing literature and how you intend to add or enhance that particular field of enquiry. During Phase 1 (Plant selection) of this assignment task, you need to decide on which medicinal plant you will be writing your research proposal based on your initial literature search. However, for the final research proposal (Phase 2) you will be required to justify your plant choice as part of the Introduction section and that will depend on published literature to support your argument. You will need to choose a medicinal plant that was NOT ALREADY SELECTED by another student. The list of selected medicinal plants by other students will be frequently announced on vUWS
