Question - The owner or manager in your workplace is interested to know that you are doing a course on workplace issues. Many decades ago, your boss dropped out of a uni course in industrial relations, regretting it to this day, but retaining a keen interest in some of the fundamental theories and concepts of IR. The boss says, ‘I want to improve my organisation using some of the ideas from your course, will you write me a report?’. S/he adds, ‘There’s nothing as practical as a good theory’. You tell the boss the topic you are interested in, it’s fine by him/her, and you get to work. S/he gives you some specific questions. 1.Does performance-­?related pay improve productivity and the quality of working life of employees and reduce conflict, or is it just a means of work intensification, or a waste of money? 2.What is the relationship between such pay schemes and employee participation in decision making? 3.What are the implications of payment systems in your own workplace and the likely consequences of change?
