1.1 An Introduction to this Unit 

This unit provides students with essential working knowledge of occupational health and safety (OHS), work health and safety (WHS) legislation and risk management required which is a requirement for graduate employment across a broad range of workplaces and industries. The unit provides a foundation in the principles and practice of hazard identification and risk management, including an introduction to specific workplace hazards such as; moving and fixed plant, electrical, biomechanical (ergonomic), gravitational (slips, trips and falls), manual handling. Students will also explore the chemical, biological and physical hazards that may be encountered in a variety of graduate employment industries, as well as the management of health and safety hazards in relation to current WHS legislation, Codes of Practices and Australian and International Standards.

2.1 Unit Learning Outcomes 

Outcome 

1 Discuss the underlying principles of occupational health and safety 

2 Research information on specific health and safety issues from relevant scholarly, government and industry sources 

3 Apply the framework of Australian work health and safety legislation in select industries/workplaces 

4 Interpret the principles of hazard identification and risk management within specific industries and workplaces 

5 Investigate and prepare a risk management plan for a selected health and safety hazards 

Task and assessed criteria 

Undertake and submit a risk assessment of a workplace hazard using the following process: 

1. Select a workplace of your choice.

2. Select your work/task activity that poses a potential hazard and risk.

3. Research the scope of hazard

4. Undertake an observation of the hazard. Don’t forget to collect relevant information from the employees involved and other sources.

5. Discuss what information and data you would use as part of this risk assessment 

To prepare your report: 

1. Complete a risk assessment using an appropriate assessment tool. You must complete each step of the risk assessment.

2. NOTE: you are to provide the completed risk assessment with your report. 3. Prepare a report to senior management on the outcome of the assessment, recommendations, and implementation process. 

The report must include at least the following sections: 

– Assignment Coversheet

– Table of Contents; A list of the sections with its page number

– Introduction; A explanation of the project and why it is needed

– Method; A summary of the process you followed to complete the project

– Risk assessment; Your completed assessment of the task
