Assignment Details
For this assignment, you will create an app for use in a Chinese restaurant by wait staff. The app will be used by the wait staff to take orders and relay them to the kitchen for preparation.
Functionality of the App
The app has four main functions aside from the home screen:
1 Start a new order
2 Display a choosable menu of dishes
3 Confirm and send to kitchen
4 Admin section
For the purposes of this assignment, the details of the dishes should be stored in some kind of ‘database’. For high marks, this should use CoreData. For a basic pass, some kind of array or list structure is acceptable.
1 Starting an order
On this screen, the wait staff user should be able to enter a table number so the order can be delivered once it is ready. Assume there are five wait staff employed and a drop-down chooser should be available so the staff can identify themselves for order tracking. We will assume that a staff member will be given a device and use that same device for the duration of that shift. Orders can consist of entrée, main and dessert. Customers may not order anything for some of these eg. Just main and dessert. If customers indicate they want to order something under one of these categories the app should move on to a screen with a list of dishes.
2 Display dishes
A range of dishes should be available under each of the three categories above. Eg under entrée: chicken Satay skewers, Shark fin soup, Spring rolls, etc. A TableView type container should be used for this. Each TableView cell should contain a Switch or similar so the waiter can select multiple items. They should be able to unselect also if the customer changes their mind. A button should be available to finalize that portion of the order and revert to the choice of the three categories. Once the order is finished the app should move on to the next screen for confirmation and send it to the kitchen. An advanced feature would be to include additional info on a dish in the
event that a customer asks questions about the nature of the dish.
3 Confirm and send
On this screen, the app should display the order in a scrollable fashion so the waiter can repeat the order to the customer to confirm all is correct. If changes are required it should be possible to revert to stage 2 as above. A button should be available so that if all is correct the order is transmitted to the kitchen. This should be via SMS. SMS code will be available in lectures however it will not actually work unless you have an Apple device you can deploy on. Your code should contain an appropriate check to see if SMS is available so the app does not crash. The total cost of the order should also be sent. Alternatively, another SMS could be sent to the register
operator with the items, prices, and total for checkout.
4 Admin section
On this screen there needs to be facilities to add, modify and delete dishes under the three categories. In order to demonstrate your app for marking you should have at least three dishes under each category. Visit an Asian restaurant if you are looking for ideas for dishes! If you have chosen to add advanced features such as extra details about dishes, as mentioned in stage 2, then these would be entered, modified or deleted in this section. B Also via this admin section it should be possible to view all orders for the shift for that staff member.
Demonstration
You are required to demonstrate your program during your scheduled practical session at the specified teaching week (or based on the advice of the lecturer/tutor). Your tutor will check your code and your understanding of the code. Make sure that you are fully familiar with the operation of your app and draw the tutor’s attention to any special or advanced features you have incorporated. You will receive no marks if you miss the demo time without an application for special consideration. To prove that the program is written by yourself, the tutor might require you to make some minor modifications. In this case, you must do the requirement in order to prove that the code is only written by yourself. You are allowed to run your program from your laptop or Apple device at the demonstration time. The majority of feedback to your work will be
delivered orally during the demonstration. The program you demonstrate should be the same as the one you submit. If you fail this assignment at your first demonstration, you are allowed to improve your work within one week (maximal grade is passing i.e. 50% in this case).
