From your assigned topic, please prepare a ~1750 word literature review or commentary on a particular aspect of molecular medicine, identifying the molecular mechanism(s) of a major disease, novel drugs and their role in treating and preventing the disease. You should base your report on extensive use of journal articles or published review articles. Pick one of the titles listed on-line or make up one of your own that relates to the course module you have been allocated to. Please make full use of the appropriate lecturers to help guide you in the preparation of your report. THERE ARE NO STUPID QUESTIONS. Ask the lecturer or me for as much help as you can.

Your report should start with a brief abstract and introduction summarizing the major principles, concepts, and evidence

Review or Commentary

After introducing the topic, describe in more detail one or more specific aspects relevant to biological or clinical research. This will take the form of a commentary or review on one or more journal articles in the context of the wider literature. Describe what the authors have shown and the evidence presented. Your review should include section headings, introduction/historical development, topical items, current directions and conclusion including your personal interpretation/evaluation of the data and information available.

In writing your report, do not go into too much experimental detail, but try to point out controversies or potential experimental limitations. You will be awarded marks for making a coherent story, not on your knowledge of all the details. I DO NOT expect you to research all aspects of the subject extensively. I have provided a few key reference papers for you, but I encourage you also to search the literature yourself.

Focus on relevant scientific content, accuracy and interpretation. Note, that I expect you to write using correct grammar and spelling. You will need to include a substantial list of references. Students are strongly encouraged to go and discuss their report content with the lecturer of the topic and to seek guidance on preparation, including reviewing drafts.
