32717: Navigation Systems Engineering Assessment Answer
Task:
This assignment concerns a flight made by a Beechcraft 1900C 12-seat regional airliner from Manchester Airport (MAN) to Inverness (INV).
The aircraft flight manual gives the following information for the aeroplane:
Wing area = 303 sq ft
Power plant output = 2 x 1100 shaft hp at MSL
CAS = IAS - 2 knots at speeds above 100 KIAS
In addition, the following is known or may be assumed:
ISA conditions
CD = 0.02068 + 0.06182 CL2 clean, and
= 0.02625 + 0.08842 CL2 in take-off configuration
?P = 0.90
?PR = 0.95
Engine output (i.e., shaft power) varies with air density to the power of 0.7, i.e.,
1 hp = 746 W
R for air = 287 J.kg-1.K-1
? for air = 7/5
g = 9.81 m.s-2
- On take-off, the aircraft is loaded to its maximum take-off mass of 16600 lbm. At that mass, the flight manual gives climb speed to be 125 KIAS. If Manchester Airport has an elevation of 78 m and climb-out is considered to begin at the standard minimum clearance height of 11 m, find the initial angle and rate of climb, the latter in both metres per second and feet per minute. Assume that the aircraft is still in take-off configuration at that point.
- (a) Later in the flight, the aircraft is cruising at 225 KTAS at an altitude of 20,000 feet, and its mass has reduced to 15,000 lbm. Determine the throttle setting, in terms of percentage of maximum power available at that altitude.
- On approach to Inverness, the aircraft is ordered to enter a holding pattern at an altitude of 5000 feet.
- What true airspeed should the aircraft fly at to minimise its fuel burn, and thereby allow it to hold for as long as possible, if its mass is now 12500 lbm?
- The holding pattern is a conventional “racetrack”. What bank angle will the aircraft be at during the turns at each end if they are standard rate one turns (i.e., 3°/s) at the airspeed found in part (i)
