2 Critically assess the relationships between policy making, policy analysis, policy research and social work practice
3 Consider the implications of policy values for alternative forms of social welfare practice
4 Analyse current policy issues from a standpoint directed toward developing alternative policy and practice pathways to the future
5 Reflect on personal values and attitudes in relation to significant social policy in practice issues
2.2 Approach to Learning
The unit is delivered through on-line lecture recordings. The weekly tutorials are for 1 hour, commencing in Week 1
Students are required to prepare for tutorials. This involves engaging with on-line lectures, doing the required readings and being prepared to actively participate in the tutorials. Attendance records will be kept to monitor weekly attendance. These records may be consulted in the assessment of requests for extensions or Special Consideration. Tutors must be advised if you are unable to attend a tutorial due to illness or misadventure.
Common mistakes or problems with Social Work assignments include:
- Lack of detail in referencing. You must give page numbers where there is a reference to ideas or data within a source. Direct quotations must be referenced with page numbers. (Refer to the link above for WSU Harvard referencing guide)
- Over-reliance on cut and paste: make sure you analyse the key ideas in relevant sources and try to summarise/write them in your own words. Provide page references.
- Choosing relevant peer-reviewed sources: use references that are relevant to social work. Do not use references in disciplines unrelated to social work e.g. business.
- Inadequate editing before submission. Poor spelling, punctuation, grammatical constructions and expression all lead to a difficult reading experience for markers of your assignments. It is likely thatyour assessment grades will su’?’?er where such problems exist. Proof-read your work carefully before submission. A good way to pick up problems is to read your draft aloud; if a sentence does not sound right, it probably needs revision (e.g. incorrect tense).
-Insufficient planning of your own argument. A sign of poor planning is the essay/ report that tends to lack logic or an identifiable argument. Sometimes such weak assignments do little more than roughly link quotations and paraphrases from external sou.
