1.1 An Introduction to this Unit

This unit introduces students to the care of individuals with mental health concerns and/or illness. The national mental health policies provide a framework to focus on a range of determinants and consequences of mental health and illness in Australia. The principles of stress vulnerability and recovery will be introduced. The unit will offer an introduction for students to caring for individuals with depression, anxiety and substance use, and their families/significant others. The concepts of therapeutic use of self and reflection when engaging with people with mental health needs will be introduced. Students will develop their knowledge of mental health assessment, risk assessment and risk management across the lifespan. Self-care strategies in everyday collaborative nursing and midwifery practice will be considered.

1.2 What is Expected of You
Study Load

A student is expected to study an hour per credit point a week. For example a 10 credit point unit would require 10 hours of study per week. This time includes the time spent within classes during lectures, tutorials or practicals.

Attendance

100% attendance is mandated to ensure students are safe, competent beginning practitioners. The associated learning activities provide the opportunity for students to acquire and consolidate essential practice skills and knowledge in a simulated learning environment. These activities build competence and confidence in the student and are an integral risk management strategy to optimise public safety. Makeup work will be submitted by students with approved special consideration for illness or misadventure.

2 Assessment Information

2.1 Unit Learning Outcomes

This unit will contribute to completion of course level outcomes, Western Sydney University graduate attributes and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Registered Nurse Standards for Practice. Course level learning outcomes can be accessed on your Unit vUWS Home Page. Promoting Mental Health and Wellbeing 1  is part of the Bachelor of Midwifery, the Bachelor of Nursing, the Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced) and the Bachelor of Nursing Graduate Entry. The unit provides the foundation for developing comprehensive, coherent and connected knowledge in the nursing discipline and introduces and develops interaction skills which will be required by graduates in their work environments.

Learning outcomes for the unit are outlined below

Blended Learning Activity Blended learning activities have been embedded throughout the unit content to enhance the student learning experiences through the use of tutorials, clinical practice units, audio visual material, small group work, and online quiz material. Access to a computer and the internet is essential in order to be able to: access course materials; to participate in discussion groups; and to access additional resources provided by the lecturer during the session.

You will then be able to apply, explore and debate the content through interactive learning activities with other students.

Group Work Group work enhances student learning. Through planned group activities, and discussion with other students, you will have the opportunity to clarify your own thoughts and understandings of unit concepts. Group work also offers the opportunity to cooperate in a team situation and to learn skills that will assist you to work effectively in a health care team.

2.3 Assessment Summary

The assessment items in this unit are designed to enable you to demonstrate that you have achieved the unit learning outcomes. Completion and submission of all assessment items which have been designated as mandatory or compulsory is essential to receive a passing grade.

To pass this unit you must:

- Achieve at least 50% when all assessment marks are totalled AND
- Complete and submit all assessment tasks at the required time and required academic standard
- Achieve satisfactory  Tutorial/workshop attendance of 100%
- Special consideration with supporting documentation must be submitted if a class is missed and makeup work will be allocated. Please contact your class teacher asap if an unavoidable emergency has occurred and special consideration submission may be delayed as a result . 

Feedback on Assessment

Feedback is an important part of the learning process that can improve your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes. Feedback is any written or spoken response made in relation to academic work such as an assessment task, a performance or product. It can be given to you by a teacher, an external assessor or student peer, and may be given individually or to a group of students. As a Western Sydney University student, it is your responsibility to seek out and act on feedback that is provided to you as a resource to further your learning.

Aim of the Assessment

– This assessment asks students to develop a beginning understanding of what life is like for people who experience mental illness with particular reference to profile/burden, treatment approaches, interviewing styles, and service initiatives.

– Students will also have the opportunity to develop their oral and written communication skills and to learn to work collaboratively in a team.

– Being able to communicate effectively with individuals and groups is an essential skill for nurses involved in mental healthcare. This assessment is a team activity designed to provide students with the opportunity to practice and develop communication and presentation skills. In their first tutorial each student will be allocated to a group presentation team of 4/5 members from their tutorial. Each team member is expected to present for 4 minutes and each team’s presentation is strictly limited to no more than two slides per presenter, plus an additional slide is allowed for references.

Task

Each group is required to choose a topic from the list below and follow the instructions to produce a Pre-Recorded Group Presentation (20 mins), a 500-word group Summary describing the presentation on a pre-developed template (found under the Assessment 2 tab on vUWS) and two PowerPoint slides per person. – Living with Major Depression during or after pregnancy

Instructions

Once your group has chosen a topic, each 20-minute group presentation should include at minimum:

– A clear introduction to the aim of the presentation, group members names and roles

– A needs analysis of the person living with mental ill health in terms of its profile within the Australian society.

– Overview of symptoms, developmental course and common treatment approaches.

– Description of relevant nurse interviewing techniques used to effectively communicate with individuals and families who may be experiencing the condition.

– An outline one current Australian service initiative designed to improve care and reduce the impact of this health condition.

– The group will also submit a 500-word summary of the groups presentation that clearly outlines the presentation with the PowerPoint Slides used during the presentation on a prepared template on vUWS.

All team members are expected to dress in casual but professional clothing when filming the Video presentation.
The Video can be filmed on ZOOM, a phone or any other suitable device.
The Video will then be uploaded to YouTube on an UNLISTED setting and the URL will be written correctly on the prepared template for this assessment found on vUWS with the group summary and PointPoint Slides
Each group will submit one template only to vUWS.
Each member of each team will sign a designated form on the template to show that each member is happy with the video presentation, 500-word summary and PowerPoint slides being submitted in this final form.

Aim of the Assessment

Much of the content in this unit is based around developing an understanding of the lived experience of a person who is challenged by mental illness. To ensure that you develop a fuller appreciation of this, your participation in informed discussion is especially valuable in this unit.

The purpose of these Participation Tasks is to assist you to prepare for discussing these issues in your tutorials. Completion of each task prior to attending tutorials will provide you with foundational information that will be built on during the tutorial, and subsequently promote active participation in tutorials and deeper learning of the content. Participation Tasks require you to:

1. Access, read and/or view the module of prescribed resources for the week in the Learning Materials folder on vUWS. Often these resources will be a mixture of video case studies, fact sheets or institutional policies and documents.

2. Complete prescribed tasks embedded under Assessment 1 in the left hand side menu on vUWS. Often this is a mixture of multiple choice quiz questions that focus on checking your understanding of the case studies, definitions of key terms, or understanding the key concepts presented in the module of learning materials for each week. Each task will open at least one week before the due date. The task will address the pre-reading and pre tutorial e-learning for the coming week’s tutorial.

Please note: Participation Task 1 (due at the beginning of week 2) will cover material found in Week 1 and Week 2 learning materials.
There are unlimited attempts for each task before the due date and time.
There is a 30-minute time restriction on each attempt.
Your highest score for each task will be used in calculating your grade.
Technical difficulties

It is strongly advised that students take advantage of the unlimited attempts and attempt each task at least once well before the due date and time. If you experience a technical problem while attempting on-line quiz, please contact the IT Helpdesk at the time of the technical difficulty so that the problem can be rectified. Make sure you retain the confirmation email from the IT Helpdesk as evidence for Special Consideration applications. No claims of technical difficulties will be considered after the weekly due date has passed.

Requirements Submission

Saturday and Sunday are counted as one calendar day each.
Assessments will not be accepted after the marked assessment task has been returned to students.

Extension of Due Date for Submission

Application forms must be submitted to the Unit Coordinator/Convenor. Requests for extension should be made as early as possible and submitted within policy deadlines. Resubmission

Resubmission of assessment items will not normally be granted if requested.

If you have suffered misadventure, illness, or you have experienced exceptional circumstances that have prevented your attendance at class or your completion and submission of assessment tasks, you may need to apply for Special Consideration via the Western Sydney University website.
