Assignment overview
This assignment is a mandatory submission, which means that in order to pass this unit of study, you must submit this assignment.
This assignment aims to develop your critical reflective thinking through critique and reflection on your own values and attitudes in relation to the delivery of culturally safe care.
The two parts to this assignment: Part A and Part B, aim to help you build upon your learning, where you will receive feedback on your first critical reflection (Part A), enabling you to apply it to this critical reflection piece (Part B).
Assignment details
Carefully consider what you have learnt in relation to social determinants and the impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes. With this in mind, you will need to write this reflection focusing on a change leader, who is bringing (or has brought) about positive outcomes by addressing a social determinant which prevents/prevented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from achieving equal health status as non-Indigenous people.
Work your way through the following steps in order to meet the requirements of this assignment:
Step 1: Choose from the following list, or alternatively you may focus on a change leader of your own choice. Reach out to your OLA if you would like to sense check your choice.

Shirley Colleen Smith (Mum Shirl)
Joyce Clague
Kristie Parker
Stan Grant
Faith Thomas
Linda Burney
Pat O’Shane
Rachel Perkins
Eddie Mabo
Neville Bonner
Anita Heiss

Step 2: Re-read your first reflection and the feedback provided by your OLA. Think about how you can apply this feedback to this reflection.
Step 3: Structure your reflection using the following steps as a guide:
Introduction (approximately 75 words).
Explain the social determinant (e.g. Racism) and how this is a barrier for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (approximately 200 words).
Explain the role your chosen change leader (eg. Adam Goodes), has played in addressing this social determinant, and therefore improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (approximately 200 words).
Discuss three ways you as a Registered Nurse/Midwife plan to provide culturally safe care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients that you care for (approximately 200 words).
