The Health Variation 4 Acute and Life Threatening injuries unit is part of the Bachelor of Nursing program. The unit provides the foundation for developing comprehensive, coherent and connected knowledge in the nursing discipline and introduces and develops interaction skills which will be required by graduates in their work environments.

Outcome
1 Interpret relevant pathophysiological processes that are related to National Health Priority case studies concerning an acute life-threatening and/or traumatic condition and its implications for professional nursing practice.
2 Analyse the results of specific diagnostic procedures that might be used to confirm specific health breakdown diagnoses associated with acute life threatening and/or traumatic complex health conditions.
3 Interpret the pharmacological concepts and their safe effective application in professional nursing practice related to caring for people with acute life threatening and/or traumatic complex health conditions.
4 Justify the selection and prioritisation of nursing strategies to provide safe effective evidence based nursing care for individuals and their family who experience an acute life-threatening event or traumatic complex health condition.
5 Apply the principles of habilitation and rehabilitation as they relate to individuals who experience an acute life-threatening or traumatic complex health issues.

 

Aim of assessment
The aim of this assessment is to enable students to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge by analysing the information provided in the case study.

2. Apply the clinical information provided in the case study and describe this clinical information within a patho- physological and patient focused framework.

3. Discuss nursing strategies and evidence based rationales to manage a patient with an acute episode of asthma.
4. Discuss the pharmacological interventions related to the management of a patient with an acute episode of a patient episode of asthma.

 

Case study
Peter is a 10 year old male, weight 45Kg.
He presented to ED with worsening respiratory symptoms over the past few hours. His parents state he is unable to talk in full sentences or undertake a peak flow. In ED Peter has been given 3 x 20 minutely nebulised Salbutamol with 6LPM of O2, IVF commenced, Stat dose of Prednisone administered, Chest X-ray shows hyperinflation of both lung fields. He was admitted to ICU due to his deteriorating respiratory function with a diagnosis of acute exacerbation of asthma.
