Unit Learning Outcomes 
The Health Variations 5: Palliative and End of Life Care unit is part of The Bachelor of Nursing, the Bachelor of Nursing ( Graduate Entry) and Bachelor of Nursing Advanced. The unit provides the foundation for developing comprehensive, coherent and connected knowledge in the nursing discipline and introduces and develops interaction skills which will be required by graduates in their work environments. Learning outcomes for the unit are outlined below.

Outcome 
1. Critically analyse the principles of a palliative approach across the age span, in a variety of healthcare delivery settings and including the role of the interdisciplinary team. 
2. Apply problem-solving skills to identify the needs of individuals experiencing a chronic, life-limiting illness including the complexities of multi-pathology and those associated with disability and/or ageing. 
3. Appraise cultural aspects of palliative care and in particular, identify the practices, beliefs and traditions of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in relation to death and dying. 
4. Critically reflect on personal values and beliefs, and how they can affect personal and professional interactions. 
5. Assess, implement and evaluate strategies to manage symptoms associated with dying, to optimise the individual’s physical, psychological, spiritual and social function. 
6. Apply effective communication and literacy skills in the provision of quality nursing care, when interacting with an individual and their family, in a palliative care context. 
7. Explore spiritual, social-cultural and psychological support strategies for people with a life-limiting illness, their family and carers. 
8. Evaluate strategies for facilitating collaborative and ethical decision-making about the provision of nursing care and advanced care planning. 

Approach to Learning 
Blended learning activities have been embedded throughout the unit content to enhance the student learning experiences through the use of tutorials, clinical practice units, audiovisual material, small group work, and online quiz material.
