Task
To study the POWAUTO gear pump provided in the lab and its components, and investigate how to fabricate the product.
Each student needs to organise his/her written project report individually by addressing the criteria in “Marking Criteria for Project Report of 48621 Manufacturing Engineering” available at UTSOnline.
The following points may be considered. Three worksheets are available for assistance.
1. Which kind of pump are you studying and what is it used for?
2. What are the materials of the main components?
3. What is the material of the Thrust Plate and why is this material chosen?
4. How does it work? ? In which direction does the drive gear rotate?
What is the path of the oil? (sketch)
Why is one ‘port’ larger than the other? Which is the ‘suction’ port?
How are the bearings lubricated?
What are the ‘dowels’ used for?
5. Why does the pump have to be manufactured to such close tolerances?
6. Which dimensional tolerances are critical? (sketches should be submitted)
7. For your chosen pump, choose the following operating parameters;
Speed, N = 1000 rpm
Flow rate, Q = 85 litres/minute
Maximum pressure, P = 310 bar / 4500 psi
Convert these to convenient units and calculate maximum hydraulic power
Assume 80% efficiency, calculate shaft power and driving torque
8. Discussion about material wastage of the driver gear.
9. Outline of the manufacturing operations that you have decided.
10. The workflow of materials through a possible factory.
It is suggested that you consult a pump reference book to find more general information on this type of pump. This will be useful in the descriptive component of your report.
What to hand in
Each student needs submit an individual written report. There is no strict limitation of page number. As a reference, 20 pages may be suggested if A4 paper, Normal Margins, Single lines space and Time New Roman 12 font are adopted.
