BACKGROUND 

The Lyric Theatre that is located next to Star Casino (Sydney) has an impressive entry structure (known as the “glass drum”), which is shown below: 

The superstructure of the glass drum is made up of: 

- a central column (around which a staircase cantilevers off); and 

- a steel roof structure. 

The stair landings tie the staircase into the building’s floor slabs, and this stabilises the column structure. 

The steel roof consists of a series of steel beams that cantilever out from the central column. At the end of the cantilevered roof beams there is a steel perimeter beam that runs in a circle around the roof structure. 

The self-weight of the glass wall is fully supported from the ends of the cantilevered roof’s perimeter beam. In other words, it is fully “hung” from the roof structure. 

The design concept needs to address a number of issues: 

- Glass is heavy (same weight as concrete per cubic metre). 

- Glass is brittle (it does not like excessive movement > movement = breakage). 

- Cantilever structures deflect (quite a bit); and 

- Steel cantilevers are particularly flexible (they deflect a lot). 

The facade contractor has stated that he cannot accept any deflection of the roof beam that supports the hung glass wall. No deflection, full stop, end of story. 

ASSIGNMENT 

1) The roof structure that supports the glass must not deflect downwards under any form of vertical load (wind load, service load, roof self-weight load, glass self-weight load). The use of perimeter support columns (in the glass wall) is not an option. They would be too big and ugly (to prevent them buckling over such a height). 

- Discuss how you propose to achieve this design requirement? 

- Provide conceptual (stick diagram) sketches of the structure to describe how your solution will work. 

2) Discuss the impact that your solution would have on the design of the glass drum superstructure. 

3) Discuss the impact that your solution would have on the surrounding building superstructure.

PART B

BACKGROUND 

The building below is known as Angel Place (Sydney): 

The roof of the building features a dramatic slope that covers the higher office floors and the plant room areas. 

The building has a conventional reinforced concrete framed superstructure. 

At the sloped areas, the reinforced concrete beams and slabs cantilever out from the support columns to reach the sloped facade. 

The design of the superstructure is complete (fully designed and drawn, ready for construction). 

The facade contract has just been awarded, and the first thing the facade engineer has asked for is the live load deflections and long term deflections at the end of the cantilevered superstructure (as his facade will be supported off the superstructure, and its design will need to accommodate those deflections). 

The structural engineer has provided the required information. 

Then the problems start: 

- The facade engineer states that in order to accommodate those deflections he would need to provide a horizontal movement joint of more than 60mm, and that he cannot do that with his standard design (which will accommodate up to 30mm). 

- The architect states that a 60mm joint is totally unacceptable from a visual perspective, and that he does not want to see anything greater than 25mm. 

- The structural engineer states that all the cantilever deflections are less than the requirements of the applicable standards and codes. His view is that there is nothing wrong with his design ! 

In order to settle the problems, and move the project forward, the Client instructs the structural engineer to re-design and re-document the superstructure to meet the deflection requirements of the facade engineer and the architect.
