TASK:

This Assignment assesses the following module Learning Outcomes (Take these from the module DMD): 4ENT1115/4ENT1128

  • Have a factual and conceptual knowledge base including the major systems and components on a motor vehicle, how they work and understand the principles behind them;

  • Appreciate how the parts contribute to the whole vehicle.

  • Apply tools and methods to carry out engine calibrations and calculations;

  • Synthesize, evaluate and apply information in order to perform basic race car setups;

  • Analyse standard vehicle parameters in order to estimate vehicle performance using given principles.

Section I (4ENT1115/4ENT1128)

  1. When a petrol engine is operating at 3000 rpm of engine speed and 100 Nm of torque, it needs fuel supply of 2.50 g/s. Please estimate SFC (Specific Fuel Consumption) and energy efficiency. The detail calculation process should be presented.

  2. Write a minimum of 500 words on the vehicle shown in figure 1 with regards to its vehicle dynamic performance, including a labelled diagram (you may use the image below or your own from an online source) with a minimum of 5 labels of the cars key performance points.

  3. Present a labelled image of a diesel engine, highlighting the key parts that contribute towards its operation, a minimum of 4 labels is expected here. Below this image you must write a comparative discussion between petrol and diesel engines, using online resources to back up your points.

Section II(4ENT1115/4ENT1128)

  1. Using a tyre of your choice, evaluate its radius using its markings and calculate the angular velocity required to yield a slip ratio of + 11% with a road speed of 30mph. You must show evidence of the tyre used (image and source reference) and all calculations completed.

  2. Write a minimum of 500 words on the advantages and disadvantages of drive by wire systems, including evidence as it is needed (references, diagrams and statistics); it is advised that you discuss each major electronic system separately and conclude as a whole.
