The purpose of this coursework is to give you hands-on experience using professional finite element analysis (FEA) software. For this task you will be given a problem to solve investigate.

This project will be formally introduced in 5034MAA lectures where the aims, objectives and assessment brief will be described and discussed.   1. Assessment

For the truss frame shown in Figure 1, construct an analytical and numerical model using static equilibrium equations and finite element analysis based on Ansys or Abaqus packages and hand calculation supported by MATLAB code. Find the coursework requirements and write the report based on the assessments criteria shown in Table 2.

2.1 Truss Frame

Figure 1 shows six truss elements frame. All the elements have the same material properties, and these are listed in Table 1. The frame is mounted as a cantilever and is loaded with a concentrated force of 10 kN, as shown in figure 1.

You will need to do the following:

  1. Construct an FEA model which allows you to investigate the behaviour of the truss.

It is expected that your FEA model will allow you to calculate the following:

  • Displacements for all nodes;
  • Forces for all nodes;
  • Forces in all elements;
  • Reaction at supports; and,
  • Stress in all elements.

More details can be found in Table 2. You may use any FEA software you wish. We strongly recommend that you use ABAQUS to construct your FEA model. We will be able to provide you with any queries you may have during the tutorials and theta sessions. You can download ABAQUS on the University PCs using Apps Anywhere. Alternatively you can download a student copy for your own laptops via the ABAQUS website.

You can use any coding software you wish for your mathematical model. You can obtain access to MATLAB, Python, C++ and MS Excel on the University PCs.

  1. Submission & Assessment Criteria Please ensure you:
  • Present your findings in a Professional Technical Report submitted as a pdf file;
  • Your report should not exceed 5 A4 pages. This does not include your title page and Appendix (coding transcript).
  • Do not include a contents page.
  • Include one Appendix which should include an annotated transcript of your code and your equilibrium equation which you should refer to in your main text.
  • You should number and provide captions for your Headings, Figures and Tables appropriately. You should reference any journals and texts using APA referencing style.
