In one or more skills demonstrations or activities organised in the workplace, candidates will be assessed in a range of practical skills carried out whilst caring for an older person. This assessment requires the learner to carry out and complete a series of tasks (skills) with an older person. The skills demonstration should provide the learner with the real life or simulated experience of working with an older person in order to develop the necessary and required competence to work with an older person in their care setting. Examples of the skills activity may include: carrying out an organised activity, outing or event for the client (resident) or group of clients such as singing, music session, reminiscence, arts & crafts, an outing (such as to the shops or a place of interest), taking exercise, reading, Suduko, making a memory book, using computers, reading aloud etc. Key skills you will demonstrate include planning, organisational skills, interpersonal, person centred individualised care skills, safety and health considerations, personal care skills, demonstration of respect, empathy, compassion, communication (including listening) skills, ability to promote independence of the older person, and /or any other skills specifically relating to the activity/ skills. OR: Alternatively, the candidate may also demonstrate competence in any three clinical skills such as Mouth care; Cleaning dentures; Hair washing; Washing and Dressing, Emptying a catheter bag; Managing incontinence; Managing diarrhoea; Promoting comfort and reducing pain; Handwashir.g; Prevention of pressure sores; Toileting; Performing a bed bath; Using a Zimmer frame correctly, Assisting with meals/ nutrition/feeding a dependant person; Using a hoist; Caring for a client on Home Oxygen therapy, managing a difficult client, Preventing the complications of reduced mobility or any other that is relevant to your area of work.
