Introduction
This handbook gives important information and a set of general guidelines to support the apprenticeship project and its assessment through the written project report. As well as these guidelines, it is important you follow the advice and instructions given by your supervisors in order to meet the specific requirements of your project.
The Synoptic Project involves you undertaking an individual piece of consultancy work that is written up as a project report of 10,000 words (+/- 10%). Your project will investigate how IT strategy is working in practice in supporting the business needs of a chosen area of your host organisation, and should lead to recommendations for change or improvement to address the challenges identified in the investigation. Alongside the professional discussion, the project report forms part of the End Point Assessment. This allows you to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you have acquired through your Masters level degree apprenticeship. Although the terminology is different in an apprenticeship degree, the project report is equivalent to a Masters dissertation.
2. Learning outcomes
The unit is designed to demonstrate, and hence assesses, your ability to do the following:-
1. Identify a relevant issue to investigate and formulate focused objectives for the project.
2. Formulate, justify and apply appropriate consultancy methods to achieve these objectives.
3. Critically evaluate and apply theory relevant to guiding the investigation in its various stages of formulating objectives, generating and analysing data and interpreting findings.
4. Propose and justify the case for change or improvement to an organisation’s IT strategy.
5. Critically reflect upon the learning undertaken and its implications for personal professional development.
Aim and objectives
Your aim should reflect the purpose guiding your project by providing a clear statement of what you are trying to achieve. The objectives should be specific action-oriented steps that logically guide the project activity and judgements about its progress. For example
Aim: To develop a road map for improving [organisation’s] e-CRM strategy and its alignment with its needs for managing relationship with customers.
Objectives
Note statements such as ‘to conduct a literature review’, ‘to interview customers..’ are not project objectives, but methodological statements. It is what you intend to achieve by doing these that are the objectives.
Getting your initial focus and objectives right is probably the hardest thing to do in getting your project off the ground. It will take some time and a lot of effort on your part to achieve this successfully. However, if you are clear on these at the start, it will make initial planning of your project more straightforward. You are not tied to these. The nature of real projects is that these may well change as your project progresses. But there should be a clear rationale for any changes, and this should be explained in your final project report.
Methodology
This section gives some indication of the methodological approach needed for your project investigation. As the focus is on investigating how IT strategy is working in practice in supporting the business needs of a chosen area of your host organisation, this is likely to involve a case study approach with one or more data generation methods such as stakeholder interviews, workplace observations, customer surveys….. It may be part of an action research approach to continually improving an area of strategy.
