Highlights
In this module, you are required to resolve your exit portfolio’s design and curation ready for your end-of-year Degree Show and upcoming career-related interviews, and you are required to write a 3000-word dissertation in response to your interests as presented in that portfolio. In your PDP 2 module you considered what makes good design and how success might be defined; this is an opportunity to study a chosen area of your discipline with more depth and theory. Therefore, your tasks are,
Resolve a portfolio of work
You began considering your portfolio and support material in the Systems & Information 3 module during the autumn / winter semester. Having established a framework for it— essentially a branding scheme that you considered across a range of assets including business cards and a CV—you are now required to revisit your content and curation in relation to your area of expertise and projected career or post-graduate academic route. Address the feedback you received but also ask yourself questions about what you would like to improve, where your messaging might require resolution and, ultimately, whether your brand and portfolio design adequately represents the graphic designer you want to promote. Most importantly, populate your portfolio. This is an exercise in editorial; of curation. What are the projects you need to show that demonstrate the acumen of the designer you are promoting? Which are the projects you’ll choose to cut? You probably don’t want to include everything you’ve ever done because your attitudes, specialisms, skills and interests will have changed or been refined over the last couple of years, and even since the end of the last semester, but you might also think about what you want to add. Use this module to plot your project choices and development needs in the parallel Strategy & Direction 3 module. Select projects carefully, as aligned with your ambitions, and then beautifully present them. Think carefully about your specialism and your design interests. This is what makes you you. You will need this information to help you with the next part.
Prepare an APA-compliant essay in the form of a sustained argument relevant to an area of your interest/expertise
In this context, ‘argument’ means ‘the point you want to make’ about an aspect of graphic design or graphic design practice, which in this case must be informed by first-hand and / or second-hand research and inspired by your portfolio / design interests and planned career route. What are the underpinning issues or ideas in your own practice or ambitions? What fascinates you about design? What are the topics around which you have firm views or want to explore more in order to have greater authority over what you do and how you talk about it? Your writing should draw out a relevant, thoughtprovoking debate and should reach a valid and relevant conclusion at the end of your research journey. Your interests might be in typography, sustainability, illustration for specific audiences, advertising, graphic design’s social responsibilities… it’s up to you to establish your area of study, and you should explain in your work how your own practice and portfolio supports this interest. You don’t have many words to play with so it’s important to have a specific area of study and to be focused in your delivery.
