Assignment Brief: Three-point bend tests will be undertaken to calculate experimentally the flexural Young’s modulus (E) of continuous carbon fibre composites of different stacking sequence. Each sample is made up of sixteen plies. Four samples of stacking sequence (i) [0] 16 , (ii) [90] 16 (iii) [+45/-45] 4s and [0/90/+45/-45] 2s will be tested. By using the rule of mixtures, the 10% rule and the following data, calculate the theoretical Young’s modulus for each sample. The data to be used for this calculation are as follows: E fibres = 206 GPa, V fibres = 0.6, E matrix = 3.5 GPa and V matrix = 0.4. From these data, you must calculate the Young’s modulus for the [0] 16 sample first. Then you can apply the 10% rule to obtain the Young’s modulus for the other samples. The Young’s modulus will also be calculated from experimental data that will be obtained from the 3-point bend test. The width and thickness of each sample will be measured at three different points using a Vernier caliper. The average of these measurements will then be calculated. The 3-point bend test will then be carried out for each sample by applying a force (in N) that will give a corresponding deflection (in mm).
