  1. Compare and contrast the views of globalization of at least two pro-globalization thinkers (such as Wolf and Friedman) with two critics of globalization such as (Stiglitz, Klein).
  1. Distinguish between proponents of free trade and the benefits of comparative advantage and the principles of mercantilism. Is there any recent evidence of a resumption of mercantilist ideas?
  1. Evaluate the role of the Bretton Woods Institutions (IMF, World Bank and WTO); does the failure of the current WTO Doha trade round signify that these institutions are no longer fit for purpose?
  1. An important role for the government is managing the macroeconomic environment. Give an example of a contractionary monetary policy and an expansionary fiscal policy and analyse how these policies can impact on businesses and consumers.
  2. With reference to Dickens (2015) ‘market-seeking’ and ‘asset-seeking’ explain why multinational enterprise engages in foreign direct investment. Can this investment be beneficial to the economies in which they operate, or has Dicken’s ‘competition state’ eroded much of the gains?
  3. Critically analyse how a persistent US fiscal deficit could have a positive fiscal multiplier effect or a negative crowding out effect on global investment. Under what circumstances would any crowding out effect be reduced?
SECTION B  Answer ONLY ONE question from this section which carries 30 marks in total. 
  1. To what extent can it be argued that current demand trends in the agro-food industry in affluent countries have damaged the advances in sustainable agriculture made by the Fairtrade movement?
  1. Assess the threat of technologies such as “Sewbot” on sustainable livelihoods of textile workers in countries such as India or Bangladesh. (30 marks) 
  2. The UK energy market has been criticised as a market failure. Evaluate the policy options available to governments in their bid to protect customers and stimulate much-needed investments in new technologies.
  1. Critically evaluate the benefits of Chinese foreign direct investment in Africa. Is this a win-win scenario for both parties or is Africa succumbing to neocolonialism?
  1. The UK founded Body Shop Chain now operates in 66 countries, critically evaluate the assertion that its recent struggles have been caused by its move away from its ethical business principles.
