1.5 Choosing a topic and supervisor

It is expected that students will consult with potential supervisors about suggested topics.  Before the commencement of the trimester in which the course commences,  students are recommended to nominate their preferred topic(s) or suggest their own topic and supervisor.

Students are encouraged to suggest their own topics,  especially topics with industrial or business relevance.  However, you must consult with a potential staff supervisor as to the suitability of any topic before submitting their suggestion.  For a student's suggested topic to be approved, a member of staff must agree to act as the student's supervisor for that topic.

  • In choosing a topic, the following questions should be considered:
  • Is there a recognized need for research in the area?
  • Is the research achievable within the allocated time?
  • Does the topic match the student’s capabilities and interests?
  • Is the research area open to further professional development?
  • Our research facilities and/or data available to the student to undertake all necessary research in the topic area?
  • In selecting a supervisor, the following questions should be considered:
  • Is this person well acquainted with the research topic?
  • Does the person have an active interest in the proposed area of research?
  • Is this person’s working style compatible with the completion of an independent piece of research in a  short time frame?
  • Is this person’s theoretical framework compatible with the focus of the research?
  • Is the person available for the entire supervisory period?

2. The Project Brief

2.1 Drawing up a Project Brief

As soon as the student and their supervisor have decided on the topic and scope of the student’s investigation project,  these should be committed to writing in the form of a  Project  Brief.  It is the responsibility of the student to draw up the Project Brief.  A template of the Project Brief is given in  Appendix 1.

The  Project  Brief should consist of one-half to a  maximum of one printed  A4 size page,  signed by the student,  the supervisor, and the  Course  Convenor.    One copy of the  Project  Brief is  retained by the supervisor, one copy by the student, and one copy is submitted to the Course Convenor for approval and registration.

The title of the  Dissertation as recorded in this  Project Brief must be used as the title of the final report.

2.2 Changes to Project Brief

It is possible that due to certain circumstances changes may be necessary to the Project Brief.  It may be that the scope of the  Dissertation project is either too wide or too narrow for the student to satisfactorily complete the course.  Appropriate minor changes should then be made to the scope (and topic if necessary).  These changes should be made following consultation between the student and the supervisor and approved by the Course Convenor.  The changes are to be documented in a new written Project Brief.  A copy of this new Project Brief must be submitted to the Course Convenor for approval and registration.  The Dissertation report will be assessed against the proposal contained in the (amended) Project Brief.

2.3 Project specification

The first part of the project is to define the problem/task to be solved/undertaken. This is the project specification stage.

The scope of each ii is defined by its title and the written Project Brief.  The scope must be such as to limit the subject matter of the Dissertation project to ensure that the study has adequate depth.  It is the responsibility of the supervisor of each Dissertation project to ensure that the scope is neither too narrow nor too wide.

2.3.1 Literature survey

The second part of the project is an extensive study of the state of the art, including all the current literature relevant to the topic of the Dissertation project.  The contribution of the literature survey to the final report will vary from project to project.

2.3.2 In-depth study

The third part is an in-depth study of particular aspects of the topic. The methodology will vary with the topic.  One possibility is an experimental investigation.  Another is a theoretical/numerical study.   It can also be a detailed study of major local projects using site visits and interviews of key industry
