The citizens of Azania are more and more concerned with animal welfare issues, and especially with the practice of using farrowing crates, which are widely spread in Betia and Cruelia. Only 20% of farmers in Deltia apply farrowing crates, compared to 70% in Betia and Cruelia. 5% of Azanian farmers use farrowing crates, but their numbers are quickly falling. In March 2019, Azanian government decided to issue the Animals Welfare Act 2019 (‘AWA’) declaring that it intends to phase out the trade of pork produced using farrowing crates. According to the AWA:

1. All pork sold in Azania must be clearly labelled, indicating whether its producer fulfils Azanian Animal Welfare Standards (AAWS). One of the conditions imposed by the regulation is that a producer must not use farrowing crates.
2. Pork without the AAWS label attracts an additional 20% salestax.
3. To obtain the AAWS label, the producer must undergo an inspection by the Azanian Trade Department. The producer, which applies for the AAWS label, must cover the costs of the inspection, including the travel costs associated with the inspection.
4. All pork imported to Azania attracts a customs duty of 30% ad valorem. The duty does not apply to pork imported from Deltia, to which a 5% customs duty applies. This difference is justified by the fact that only 20% of Deltian pork is produced using farrowing crates.
