Highlights
General Guidelines:
Write the report as a consultant who is selling his/her services/expertise to a company involved in the case. You can write it in third person or in first person plural (as a representative of a consulting group).
Make sure that your argument has a throughout logic and it flows. In other words:
start with a clear scope (what is the case about, which issues are considered and why, which issues are outside the scope of this report, what is the intended outcome of your report)
identify the problems/issues
analyze them
explain their causes through cultural differences (use Kluckhohn & Strodtbeck’s model as required minimum – but only those orientations/dimensions that are applicable to your case; you can add supplementary applicable dimensions that are not available in K&S from other cultural models)
from your explanation draw conclusions about possible solutions
evaluate the identified solutions (consider alternatives)
select the best solution(s) and justify why (using findings from your analysis, justified by the same cultural dimensions/orientations used in your analysis, you can add other dimensions/orientations to strengthen your justification)
consider the feasibility/implications of their implementation (do you have resources, does it fit within the available time frame, etc.)
apply your analysis to the company specifics (company’s org. values, org. culture, strategy, etc.) – since the company name is fictitious, draw conclusions about these features from the case and state in your scope which additional assumptions you made
Do NOT use headings such as Mapping, Bridging, Integrating. It might be easier to organize the report by areas of problems/issues (identified in headings) and specific problems within each area (specified by sub-headings). Then you can do all the mapping, bridging and evaluation of considered solutions of each problem in one section together (but your report structure should be dictated by the nature of the identified problems/issues and how much they are inter-related).
You do not need to have a separate section on the used cultural orientations/dimensions. THIS IS NOT AN ESSAY ABOUT CULTURAL DIMENSIONS; THE DIMENSIONS ARE YOUR TOOLS FOR THE ANALYSIS. You can simply use these dimensions and explain them briefly in the analysis (you can refer to a more detailed description in appendix). If you have a separate section, make sure that the reader understands what you are talking about in the analysis without having read this section (which may happen in “real” life). Remember that you are writing for business people who may not know Kluckhohn & Strodtbeck, Hofstede, etc. So explain each dimension briefly in everyday language and reference it.
Demonstrate that you have researched the topic by using references from outside the textbook. Since you have limited time, credible Internet sources are sufficient. Reference in text! And reference information from the case.
You can use your own ideas for recommended solutions – so long they are justified by your conclusions from your analysis.
Stay within 2,000-2,500 word limit + 300 words for executive summary (penalty applies if under or over) – Title Page, Executive Summary, Table of Contents, Appendices, List of References are NOT included in the word count.
Double-space the report – for easy reading by the marker (a “real-life” report would be single- or 1.5-spaced).
Set aside time to check that the finished report reads like a coherent whole and has a logical flow.
When you finish the report, read it (or ask somebody who has not been involved) and check if it makes sense and if it would convince the business person that you know what you are talking about and that the reasons for your recommendations are clear and convincing. In other words: Would they hire you to solve the problem?
RECOMMENDATIONS
Their logic emerges from evaluation of possible solutions
Explain what should be done to solve the identified/analyzed issues
Outline a specific course of action as a result of your (cultural) analysis
Briefly explain why these recommended solutions are the most appropriate ones
If you have done this explanation /reasoning under each problem already, summarize each recommendation briefly. You may number them R1, R2, etc.
Must be realistic (your recommendations can be implemented under current conditions)
Must be feasible/workable (there are resources and time to do it)
IMPLEMENTATION AND IMPLICATIONS
Address how can your recommendations be implemented/put into effect (who does what, how & when)
What are the implications of each recommendation in terms of resources, timing, impact on environment, etc. (what is needed so that they can be implemented)
This can be a separate section or you can address these under each listed recommendation in the previous section
CONCLUSION
Provide an overall conclusion of the report
Summarize the major findings
Do not introduce new evidence
Make sure that conclusion is consistent with what you stated in the Introduction and Executive Summary
APPENDICES
Include appendices only if they support your reasoning
Refer to them in text and briefly explain them in text
Number them
You can write the headings and page numbers on appendices by hand if they are copied from other resources (in “real-life” report you copy and paste typed ones)
