This module aims to develop a sound understanding for the need of clean water for all and highlights the United Nations Millennium Development Goals to address the problem of water scarcity at a global level. Through the module, students will develop a sound capability to evaluate the distribution and impact of a range of pollutants in the freshwater environment within the context of legislation, regulation and pollution control strategies. Legislative and regulatory standards will enable the understanding of legislation including Directives, and regulation to manage the aquatic environment towards a sustainable solution. Aspects of surface water and groundwater quality and contamination will be evaluated with the help of case studies. Field work is an important component of the module and will take place during an optional residential block where aspects of strategic sampling protocols are taught alongside quality assurance aspects of data generation using a range of analytical techniques.
2. Learning Outcomes

1. Identify the sources and effects of contaminants in the freshwater environment, and critically appreciate the strategies to prevent, control, and manage contamination towards a sustainable future
2. Understand and evaluate the application of techniques for monitoring and assessment of water quality of freshwater environments such as rivers, lakes, ponds, streams, groundwater and drinking water
3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of current environmental and human health issues in the context of freshwater contamination and how policy and legislation are used to mitigate the potential impacts
