The founding members included Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The name was changed to European Union (EU) in 1993 to reflect the evolution of the ECC from an economic union to an organization traversing policy areas including climate, environment, health, external relations, security, justice and migration. Today, it is a unique economic and political union between 27 European countries (earlier 28 as the United Kingdom left the European Union on 31 January 2020) (Union, 2020)

Finally, in its third attempt, the United Kingdom’s ECC membership came into effect on ECC on 1 January 1973, after Charles de Gaulle’s resignation in 1969.
