Highlights
Main problem:
According to Koopmans (2020) women in Saudi Arabia remain outside the labour market and therefore contribute little to economic growth. The UNDP’s Human Development Report (2020) indicates that only about 22% of Saudi women are on the labour market compared to 78% of men.
Main Objective:
With reference to the main problem observed as per the article Koopmans(2020) and UNDP’s Human Development Report (2020) the main objective of our study is to raise the workforce value of Saudi women from 22% to an acceptable value of 40% by 2030.
Specific Objectives:
The Government of Saudi Arabia needs to play a pivotal role in achieving the main objective in raising the women workforce. The specific objectives of this project include:
Possible Activities
Three important issues need to be addressed in order to raise the labour force participation rate of Saudi women. This will be achieved by:
1. Increasing the number of women in the positions of power: several studies of social experiments by economists have demonstrated how quotas might help increase the number of women in positions of power. For example, one study conducted by Beaman discovered that In India, a constitutional amendment that required one-third of village council president positions be reserved for women led to more women being elected. A carefully thought out plan to push for the government to reserve a specific quota for women In the position of power should be encouraged.
2. Enforcing Equality in the Workplaces: According to research by NGO Al Nahdaix, Saudi men are being paid more than Saudi women for the same work as gender pay gap in Saudi Arabia stands at 49%, this is partly caused by discrimination within hiring firms. To reduce this form of discrimination, government policies should be enacted to ensure that women get the same pay as men when they do the same job, with this in place, it will encourage more women to join the workforce as they can be rest assured that the system isn't rigged against them.
3. Reforming the workplace to redress issues faced by Female employees: This can be achieved by identifying the imbalances in profession that seem to be culturally reserved for men. Programs aimed at supporting skill acquisition and specialization should be put in place to bridge the gap between women and men in the workplace.
Target Group:
This project is an attempt to highlight and reveal the discrimination against Saudi women and its impact on economic growth. Therefore, our main target group is Saudi women - to consolidate the gains already made. Perhaps the most important target group will be the 78% of women who are unable to participate due to factors such as lack of education, lack of opportunities, and general societal impediments which hinder their ability to be participants in the work economy.
