Task summary

You will draw on all that you have learned about contemporary leadership to reflect on and analyse a personal experience. In doing so you are aiming to make explicit and meaningful connections between your practical experience and the knowledge introduced in this unit. To do this you will pick a personal experience that fits one of three situations and use a structure based on Gibbs Reflective Cycle to write an essay (maximum 3,000 words, excluding title page, references and appendix) that meets the criteria the task rubric.

In completing this task, you are expected to draw upon broader knowledge gained in your studies to this point. Including references to other readings to support and contextualise your opinion is required.

Task description

Select one of the following:

  1. A challenging situation where you were working on a project and needed to demonstrate leadership in a group.
  1. A positive or negative situation where you observed a real-life example of leadership.
  2. A positive or negative situation where you were a follower working on a project under the leadership of someone else.

Use the following essay structure (based on Gibbs Reflective Cycle) and the content from this unit to describe, analyse and reflect upon the situation. It is expected that you will use the relevant literature and theory introduced in this unit and elsewhere to understand, analyse and reflect on your chosen situation.

Your essay should be structured using the following headings

  1. Description – birds eye view of the situation/event
  2. Feelings – both your own emotions and those observed of others
  3. Evaluation- strength of the emotions
  4. Analysis- dominant emotion?
  1. Conclusion- what happened/ how it made others feel so we can work out what was coming from the emotions and how it affects others on the job
  1. Action plan – recommendations? How would we change things to increase the positive emotions and decrease the negative emotions?

Task conditions

  1. Essays are marked on how well the specific requirements are achieved in accordance with the assessment criteria in the rubric.
