A child was diagnosed with a severe Malaria infestation and a high titre of typhoid bacteria. His packed cell volume (PCV) test showed a relatively normal bematocrit of 40%. Since a patient with severe Malaria infestation is expected to have low PCV due to hemolytic anemia, why do you think the child still has a relatively normal PCV?
