Assignment Task:

Guidelines

Originally this task required that you identify a contemporary health issue being discussed on social media (or on other forms of media). However due to the current focus on the Covid-19 epidemic, this restricts the range of topics potentially discussed. As well as being an assessment activity, the poster presentation and an opportunity for peer to peer teaching and increased exposure to education relating to contemporary health issues. Therefore, rather than responding to health issues being discussed on social media, you are asked to develop an educational response to one of the national health priority areas in Australia. These are diseases and conditions given focused attention because of their significant contribution to the burden of illness and injury in the Australian community.

This identifies 9 national health priority areas

1. Cancer

2. Cardiovascular health

3. Injury prevention and control

4. Mental health

5. Diabetes mellitus

6. Asthma

7. Arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions

8. Obesity

9. Dementia

Your health education presentation can relate to any aspect of these areas.

The task

Your task is to develop a concise and brief educative response to improve the knowledge of the public in the form of a poster (i.e. one power point slide), to be presented in class supported by a 3 - minute verbal explanation of the health topic and the influences you considered in developing your poster response.

A further 2 minutes will be allocated to answer questions from the class.

This task includes peer assessment, contributing 50% towards the total mark available calculated using the average result recorded from collation of peer completed marking rubrics. The remaining 50% of available marks will be awarded by the class tutor. How this arrangement will work will be explained in further detail during the week 10 tutorial.

The assessment instructions require that you consider the socio-cultural influences and health literacy of those engaged in discussion of this health issue. Please demonstrate consideration of this in the design and content of your poster.

The poster component

You are required to submit via email to your tutor a PDF version of your poster by 10am on Monday May 11th. You must be prepared to speak about the content of your poster and justifying your design considerations in your tutorial class that week. Your tutor will develop a schedule of presentations for the tutorials held in weeks 11 and 12. This schedule will not be available prior to your tutorial class. You must attend class prepared to deliver your presentation.

It is suggested that you use a PowerPoint slide as the foundation of your poster. This is only a suggestion. You may use whatever format you prefer to develop your poster. It must be submitted as a PDF document, as this is the format compatible with the Collaborate platform we use for our online tutorials.

The word count associated with this task is 1000 words. This does not mean that you need to have 1000 words on your poster! You need use as many words as you require to provide a suitable educative resource. You will also be speaking to your poster, which is incorporated in the 1000-word allocation associated with this task.

The poster is an educative one, therefore it must reflect accurate contemporary information supported by academic standard references. Examples of research conference posters (which also need to maintain similar academic standards) have been provided as examples of how this can be achieved, as well as providing the opportunity to consider different styles and components of educative poster design. These posters were used in the week 8 tutorials for critiquing purposes.

While the poster allows for demonstration of creativity, this is not what you are being assessed on. The emphasis is on demonstration of your understanding and application of design principles related to development of health education material.

The oral presentation component

Presenting information to peers and colleagues is an important component of professional practice in health care, from patient hand over, case management conferences and for educational purposes.

You are required to speak for 3 minutes in your online tutorial in support of your educational poster. Therefore, it is necessary that you have access to an appropriate means for verbal communication during the week 11 and week 12 tutorials. If your usual equipment for attending the tutorial does not enable you to join in verbal conversation, alternative arrangements will need to be made. It is possible to join class via mobile phone which will facilitate this level of participation. Please contact the unit coordinator Diana Guzys via email diana.guzys@utas.edu.au if you are not able to ensure your verbal participation in this assessment task.

The content of the verbal component of this task should include a brief overview of the key educational content of the poster and justification of your design decisions. You will also need to respond to any questions posed following your presentation.
