Question 1 - Identification and Biometrics
A vendor of a fingerprint biometric identification system has performed some benchmarktests on their system to test the efficiency and adjustment of the system where the system isable to plausibly detect genuine and forged biometric identities. After completing the testing phase, the test engineers have come up with a mathematical model of False Accept Rate (FAR)and False Reject Rate (FRR) for their system using the polynomial functions as follows
Where ???? refers to the sensitivity adjustment of the biometric systems, where we represent each different adjustment by an integer value in the range of 1 and 18.
a) Draw a graph of FAR and FFR. The graph should show both FAR and FRR against ????. Writea paragraph to justify the trends in the graph. You may use Excel or any other suitabletool to produce the chart.
b) What does EER stand for and what is it used for? Show this point in the graph providingthe value of x and the value of FAR/FRR.
c) To learn more about the performance of the fingerprint system, an experiment isconducted. T is the sample size of the biometric IDs at the point of EER adjustment.
Answer the following [Note: you may need to use.
I. The experiment results have shown 100 total truly accepted (TA) requests among allaccepted requests in the test. To avoid confusion, truly accepted requests meansthat the system was able to detect the genuinely enrolled fingerprint IDs. Find howmany requests the system has falsely accepted (FA)? You may need to round youranswer.
II. The experiment results have shown a total of 20 truly rejected (TR) requests amongall rejected requests being tested. To avoid confusion, truly rejected requests meansthat the system was able to detect the genuinely unenrolled fingerprint IDs. Find howmany requests the system has falsely rejected (FR)? you may need to round youranswer.
III. Based on the previous parameters provided and calculated in question 1 parts c) Iand c)
II, find the total requests for biometric IDs which have been tested in this trial?
d) Consider that you have three different applications as follows:
a. Gym access.
b. Banking – access to a safe deposit box.
c. Forensic application (auditing online activities).
Can you define what is the best adjustments for each application based on your graphsproduced in Question 1, part a? For simplicity, we assume that the Type I and Type II error rates should be less than 50% and the proposed ranges of adjustments should be not overlapped for these three application domains. Justify your answer.
