Highlights
Description:
This assignment follows from and builds on your Annotated Bibliography assignment and is intended to help you to accomplish two main tasks: 1) Engaging with the content of a given academic source; and 2) Practicing advanced research skills by integrating paraphrased ideas and direct quotations from your research sources while citing accordingly. Another term for this skill is source integration.
In this assignment, you are being asked to write a short multi-paragraph paper in which you discuss one academic article from your Annotated Bibliography assignment. In order to discuss this article, you will practice some of the source integration and stylistic techniques necessary for strong scholarly writing. Here you will have the opportunity to practice these skills and techniques as a means to get more comfortable with different ways of using sources in your academic writing. Ideally, this practice will make these techniques easier to employ in your future research and writing assignments.
Instructions:
Your task is to compose a thoughtful written reflection on the content and main argument of your academic source of choice. Any thoughtful, sophisticated insights, arguments, or musings are welcome, as long as they are based on careful reading and reflection.
Remember to choose an academic source from your Annotated Bibliography so you are already familiar with the material. For the purpose of this assignment, it is best to choose a journal article or book chapter, as opposed to a book.
Below you will find the different source integration techniques to include in your short reflection paper. These specific techniques are further explained and demonstrated in the document ‘A Guide to Source Integration.’ This guide must be consulted for this assignment and can be found under the Assignment Guidelines tab on D2L.
You are asked to do the following nine (9) things at some point in your written assignment:
1. Summarize the source or a large portion in your own words, in a manner and cite the source to give credit for the summarized content.
2. Paraphrase a passage from a source, re-writing the same idea in about the same length but without using practically any of the original wording or phrasing. Cite the source to give credit for the paraphrased content.
3. Use a signal phrase that explicitly mentions the author(s) name(s) before a full-sentence direct quote from a source. Use quotation marks and cite with a page number.
4. Create an interrupted quotation by inserting a signal phrase in the middle of a quote. Use quotation marks, cite the source and include a page number for the quote.
5. Use a colon to compose a ‘colonated’ quotation that introduces a quote using a lead-in sentence of your own creation. Use quotation marks and cite with a page number.
6. Choose a relevant portion of text to quote at length, creating a block quotation with the appropriate weird margins, squared ‘justified’ text, and with different line spacing as required by your chosen APA style guide.
7. Create a blended quotation by making a hybrid sentence, merging together your own original phrasing with an incomplete portion of a quoted sentence to make a hybrid. Use quotation marks and a citation to show which half is borrowed wording.
8. Use a quotation fragment from your source to complete a sentence of your own original wording. Even though you’ve just borrowed a few words, cite the fragment.
9. Use square brackets to make an adjustment to the wording or capitalization of a quotation. This is especially useful when using a blended or fragment quotation. As usual, the quotation should have quotation marks and a citation.
