Question 1 (7 marks)
A large refrigeration plant is to be maintained at -15°C, and it requires refrigeration at a rate of 100kW. The condenser of the plant is to be cooled by liquid water, which experiences a temperature rise of 8°C as it flows over the coils of the condenser. The plant uses refrigerant 134a between the pressure limits of 120kPa and 700kPa. Assuming the compressor has an isentropic efficiency of 75 percent, determine:
a) The mass flow rate of the refrigerant [2]
b) The power input to the compressor [2]
c) The mass flow rate of the cooling water, (c = 4.18 kJ/kg°C) [2]
Sketch and label all the essential information in T-s diagram [1]
Question 2 (9 marks)
For a room to be air conditioned, the sensible heat gain is 12kW, the latent heat gain is 3.5kW and the inside design condition is 21°C DB and 50% RH. Determine the apparatus dew point (ADP) and the quantity of air to be circulated, if 75% recirculated air mixed with 25% outside air at 32°C DB and 27°C WB. The coil contact efficiency is 80% (BPF=0.2)
Draw the cycle on a psychrometric chart.
