Abstract
Appraisal frameworks and evaluations have been employed to identify features of both written and spoken discourse; however, few studies discussed how evaluative language is used in literary work and how gender affects one’s attitude and use of graduation. To fill this research gap, the present study employs Martin and White’s (2005) Appraisal theory, especially drawing on the Attitude and Graduation frameworks as the theoretical frameworks to discuss and analyze linguistics features in the selected text, Little Women, and provide a discourse analysis, together with feminism perspectives, i.e. Deficit Theory, Difference Model and Performativity. The findings showed that women characters from the 19th century shared some similar attitudes when they think about marriage—pursuing real love in marriage. Moreover, they have adopted some different ways of expression when talking about marriage, with some being more feminine and some more masculine. This result can answer the first research question about the characters’ feelings, as well as to contribute to the academic discourse which also analyze through the lens of feminism studies.
