Question B2. (Answer all parts)
(a) A personnel and load winch relies on a steel rope with a diameter of 6.0 mm. The tensile strength of the steel grade used to manufacture the rope is quoted as 521 MPa and the Young's Modulus as 195 GPa.
(i) Calculate the maximum load that could utilise the winch based on the specification and dimensions of the steel rope. Assume a factor of safety of 5 for this safety critical application.
[8 marks]
(ii) Calculate the stress and extension in the rope if the length is 2 metres and a mass of 215 kg was applied to it.
[7 marks]
(b) Calculate the maximum angle an orthopaedic bed, with maximum patient mass limit of 190 kg can be raised to before a patient would slide down the bed. The coefficient of friction between the patient and the bed, p=0.404
