What is likely to be the short-term impact of the US’s Indo-Pacific strategy on its military basing in the region?
In analysing your chosen topic, you will be required to use a basic PEST (Political, Economic, Social and Technological) analysis to structure your assessment. A PEST analysis is a framework for describing the relevant environmental factors in assessments.
Your basic PEST analysis should examine the following four factors:
Political - These factors are the degree to which government intervenes in society. Examples include tax policy, labor law, environmental law, trade restrictions, tariffs, and political stability.
Economic - These factors include economic growth, interest rates, budgetary constraints and the inflation rate. Economic factors have major impacts on how law enforcement organisations operate and make decisions. It also impacts criminal behaviour.
Social - These factors include the cultural aspects of society and include health consciousness, population growth rate, age distribution, career attitudes and emphasis on safety. For example, an aging population might lead to a smaller and less-willing workforce (thus increasing the cost of labor).
Technological - These factors include both the development of new technologies and also the way technologies are used. It includes R&D activity, automation, technology incentives and the rate of technological change.
Overall, your strategic assessment should do the following:
1. Identify and address the key issue.
2. Demonstrate sound analytical skills, including the use of logic and evidence.
3. Demonstrate clear estimative judgments.
Graphs and diagrams that are relevant to the student’s analysis should be attached as an appendix to the paper (but NOT in the body of the paper).

Strategic Assessment
This is a reminder that Assessment One (Strategic Assessment) is due Saturdayday19September 2020.
As a guide, your Strategic Assessment should aim to have the following basic structure:
1. Key Judgments (approx. 100 words)
2. Analysis (approx. 1600 words)
3. Implications (approx. 300 words)
Your analysis section should outline/describe/examine the key factors involved in your topic.  You don’t have to strictly follow the PEST outline.  It’s merely a way of prompting you to think about the factors that might be included in your analysis of the issue.  For example, if you were responding to the question, "Is satellite competition increasing the militarisation of outer space?", you’d definitely want to discuss, as a minimum, relevant satellite technologies (a technological factor) and probably the competition between major powers (a political factor).
Once you have a reasonable description of the issue in your analysis, then you can outline the likely implications for your main customer (make sure you identify who they are).  For example, if your main customer was Australia's Chief of the Defence Force/Secretary of Defence, you’d need to explain how your analysis is relevant to the the Department of Defence's decision-making.
Finally, sum up your strategic assessment in the key judgments section.  Use three dot points of 1-2 sentences each.
