You work in a community-based organisation that provides a range of services including individual counselling, group work, educational programs and advocacy to people living in the area. You have good relationships with local services and institutions including education, health, the local Multicultural Services Centre, Carers' Centre and allied health. 

The community In which you work has high rates of unemployment, particularly for young people and older people. There are high rates of poverty and generational disadvantage. The community in which you work is located 45 minutes by car from Adelaide and public transport is somewhat accessible and includes rail and bus links. 

You are about to meet with Seshni. Seshni was born in a small village in India. At age 5, she moved to Australia with her mother, father and younger brother Sanjay, who was then aged 2. Seshni is now 17 and lives with her mother, father and brother and has been referred to your service as she is seeking assistance with her family. Seshni has been accepted into a hairdressing apprenticeship however the job is based in Melbourne. Seshni told the intake worker that she is planning on moving to Melbourne with her best friend early next year once Covid restrictions are due to ease. Seshni also told the worker that her mother and father are aged in their 60s, speak no English" and are "getting way too old and have no support or help" to look after Sanjay. Seshni reported that Sanjay has cerebral palsy and, depending on his pain levels, sometimes uses a wheelchair, is able to feed himself, communicate and does not have problems with his vision or hearing. Sanjay is now aged 14, attends the local high school and has a lot of friends and social networks but "doesn't get along" with his parents as he does not speak "their language". Seshni said she is the "translator and mediator' between Sanjay and their parents and Is worried about what will happen once she moves away. Seshni wants to take up the opportunity to train as a hairdresser but feels a great deal of guilt about letting her parents and brother down. She would like to work with you to work through these feelings and think about strategies to manage the needs of her parents and brother.
