Highlights
Scenario :
A registered nurse (Bob) of 2 months has commenced an early shift on a complex medical unit. He has been assigned eight patients in conjunction with another registered nurse (Sally). They work as a team to provide the required care for the allocated patients. Whilst the other RN is at morning tea, a doctor approaches Bob with a stat order for intravenous antibiotics for one of their patients. Bob heads to the medication area to prepare the antibiotic. As he does so, he is approached by the daughter of another patient who requires urgent assistance as they have had an episode of explosive diarrhoea. The patient is in the bathroom, but the daughter needs assistance to clean her mother as she feels that mother will require another shower. Bob explains that he will be able to assist shortly, but that he needs to administer the antibiotic first. The daughter is clearly dissatisfied with the response and insists that her mother requires a shower immediately. Bob repeats his priority and the reasons for his decision, and provides an appropriate time frame. The daughter disregards him and commences to shower her mother on her own while complaining loudly that this is not her job. The other patients and visitors are able to hear her complaint.
Later that day the daughter approaches Bob and apologises for her behaviour. She states that she feels ashamed because she has embarrassed her mother by her behaviour, and humiliated both herself and Bob in the process. The explanation given for the behaviour was frustration as she was running late for work. She is already having difficulty at work due to the amount of time she has had off due to her mother’s illness.
